Argyle fire causes $700,000 in damage to mansion
Painter burned while working on home under construction07:44 PM CDT on Friday, September 14, 2007
ARGYLE — A painter working in a nearly completed house in the Pilot Knob Estates addition suffered first- and second-degree burns when the house became a conflagration Thursday afternoon.
Assistant Denton County Fire Marshal Roland Asebedo, who was investigating the fire, said witnesses had given statements about the origin of the fire but it had not been confirmed.
“Part of the roof collapsed, and we’ll have to dig it out to confirm the cause and origin,” he said at the scene.
He said the house was a total loss, and estimated damages at $700,000.
The painter was burned on his hands, face and arms, Asebedo said. He was taken by emergency helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. His name was not released.
A crew of painters was working in the two-story stone house on Johns Well Court about 3:15 p.m. when the fire broke out, said Argyle police Sgt. Anthony Lewis. About 30 firefighters from the Argyle, Denton, Double Oak, Roanoke and Flower Mound fire departments responded.
Lewis said the house was still under construction and about 95 percent complete. Venetian Home Construction was the builder. The owner’s name was not released.
The fire extended to a separate garage behind the house but not to other homes in the subdivision.
“These are roughly 3- to 5-acre tracts, so they were able to keep it from spreading,” he said.
The fire was declared under control, but flames still were leaping from the collapsed roof at 5 p.m.
