Prestonwood Baptist pastor discloses prostate cancer surgery

The Rev. Jack Graham has had surgery for prostate cancer and is taking a sabbatical as pastor of 28,000-member Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano.

Graham, 58, wrote his congregation last week that the cancer was diagnosed in April during a routine checkup and subsequent biopsy.

He said he had successful surgery on May 14.

He said he decided “for a number of reasons” to keep the news of his health private and returned to the pulpit and a scaled-back work schedule just 10 days after surgery.

Earlier this month, the church's personnel committee, made up of laypeople, announced that Graham would be granted a sabbatical in honor of his 20th anniversary as pastor.

“Now," he said in his letter, "in the providence of God, Prestonwood has given us a two-month sabbatical. It is perfect timing to begin that sabbatical now for the continued healing of my body, soul and spirit.”

Graham is a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention and also has a broadcast ministry.
