Karina Ramírez: Western store opens in former Howdy Doody site
07:16 PM CDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009
The area’s newest western store, MCG Western, has set up shop at 719 E. Sherman Drive in Denton, near the recently closed Piggly Wiggly.
“It stands for Mark, Cuqui and Gueros [a Spanish slang for Caucasian],” said Maria Simmons, 42, who was born in Durango, Mexico, and is one of the store’s owners. “It stands for my husband, me and our two sons.”
Maria and her husband, Mark, 45, sell a variety of western-themed items at the store.
Some pieces, such as pottery, were purchased in Mexico and others come from local merchants who wish to expand their clientele.
The store opened three months ago under the name MCG Outlet, which will change to MCG Western once the required paperwork is filed.
“It used to be a Howdy Doody convenience store,” which has been closed since 1984, Mark said of the 2,100-square-foot location.
