2009 in review
Businesses rise and fall, but hope stays steady08:12 PM CST on Saturday, December 26, 2009
Denton businesses faced plenty of hurdles in 2009, including record national unemployment numbers and local foreclosure postings.
It’s been a deep global recession, with local companies like Peterbilt Motors Co., Victor Equipment and Jet Works Air Center cutting jobs, and other businesses — including two Chrysler dealerships, Circuit City, Fairhaven Retirement Home and Piggly Wiggly — shutting their doors.
Deals have fallen through, contracts have been voided and each business in the community has felt a nip or two from the frigid economy.
But the year wasn’t all bad.
There were several bright spots of hope as local men and women continued to make strides toward building sustainable businesses.
Some of those hopeful signs include the University of North Texas’ new high-powered computing facility at Discovery Park, Aldi’s $50 million Denton distribution center, several new hotels and two independent coffee shops.
And now it’s time to reflect on those high and low points of 2009 so far.
