Dawn Cobb: Denton’s sales tax allocations up so far
Sales tax allocations for February were up in Denton by 3 percent compared to the same month last year and up 5.47 percent above budget, according to city financial records. Fiscal year-to-date records, beginning in October, show the city is about 2.26 percent above budget projections and about 2.7 percent above the first five months of the last fiscal year.

Dawn Cobb: Miguelito’s expands to Denton
The new Miguelito’s Mex­ican Restaurant opened Monday in Denton. Known for its family atmosphere and Tex-Mex dishes, the new McKinney Street location will continue the tradition started by owners Vinny and Diana Cruz. The new location is the fourth Miguelito’s, with other locations in Krum, Sanger and Hurst.

Even though officials say the market is tough now, a lot is happening in and around Denton. According to information from city officials, at least seven companies — both new and existing — are building new plants or expanding with plans to add new employees.

Dawn Cobb: Unemployment takes a dip in February
Unemployment in both the city of Denton and in Denton County took a dip in February, according to reports from the Texas Workforce Commission. Denton’s unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point from 3.8 percent in January to 3.6 percent in February. The drop goes against past years’ comparisons for the same months. In 2007, the unemployment rate remained static at 4 percent; in 2006, the rate rose two-tenths of a percent from 3.5 percent in January to 3.7 percent in February.
