Pam Rainey: End of school year near: Thank a teacher, hug a grad

10:50 AM CDT on Sunday, May 4, 2008

Soon, the graduating class of our community’s high schools will enter an exciting time in their lives. Hopefully, they will be enrolling in college and beginning a new chapter of their educational careers. As I drive around Denton, I’m amazed at how Denton’s school district has grown in the past few years.

I admit I was embarrassed last year when a client from out of state was moving to Denton. The client wanted detailed information about each elementary school. I realized I no longer knew the names and locations of each school, and many of the teachers within the district. We have new schools. I need to introduce myself to them.

When my children were in school, I knew where every school was and was on a first-name basis with most of the teachers. With growth, however, comes opportunity for new programs and expansion of the wonderful programs in place, such as the Metroplex Children’s Choir, as I mentioned several articles ago.

I’ve learned that some things never change. Whether our district is small or large, our children and teachers will always need encouragement and volunteers. So whether you are a parent, grandparent or friend of a student in one or more of our schools, you might consider encouraging a teacher or student this spring.

In talking to several local teachers, I’ve learned that, while teaching can be a rewarding profession, it can have many challenges. When you think about it, our teachers are entrusted with our most valuable possessions for long periods each day — our children and our future. So, why not locate a community teacher to encourage as they make their way to the countdown until the end of the year.

For some teachers, the end of the year means saying goodbye to a great group of brilliant children. For others, it means letting go of a trying year and a group of students who have had many challenges and face uncertain futures for a variety of reasons. We normally think about September being “apple for a teacher” month. What about making May our “apple for a teacher” month in Denton, to thank them for their hard work?

And don’t forget to thank the parents and grandparents who are involved in the schools, volunteering with book fairs, lending a hand with fundraisers or reading to children through programs such as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program’s Rockin’ Readers. Congratulations and best wishes to everyone in our school district for a fine 2007-08 school year.

If gardening is your thing and you are now in tight quarters, not to worry. The Denton Parks and Recreation Department has just the space for you. You can rent a plot of land to plant a garden. Plots in the Denton Community Garden at Bowling Green Park are available for planting. Planting began Feb. 1, and plots are about 15 by 15 feet and can be planted through spring and summer for $20. Call the department’s office at 940-349-PARK.

It’s time to don your swimsuit and head for the water. At the Denton Natatorium, 2400 Long Road, there are many classes available for senior adults who want to stay in shape. The one that appeals to me is called Water Walking. It sounds less strenuous on the knees. There is also Deep Water Aerobics, Shallow Water Aerobics and Senior Water Exercise.

If you are serious about getting into shape, call 940-349-8800.
