Spring dance concert features student works

A free spring dance concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at North Central Texas College. The concert will be at NCTC’s First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts at the college’s Gainesville campus.

The concert will feature several new dances choreographed and performed by students and dance instructor Andra Yount, as well as a special appearance by several guest artists from the Texas Wom­an’s University dance department.

Corinth campus sponsors open house

NCTC’s Corinth campus, 1500 N. Corinth St., will have its spring open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 2.

Business, industry, community and educational partners are invited to participate in the round­table discussions. Roy Cul­ber­son, dean of the Corinth campus, will lead a business roundtable discussion on the campus’ future. Condoa Par­rent, director of student services, will lead an educational needs assessment discussion with the educational community to re­search NCTC’s outreach that will assist middle and high schools with student retention.

Following the discussions, there will be a networking luncheon for guests, students, faculty and staff.

Novelist, screenwriter to speak at writing awards

Texas novelist and screenwriter Caleb Pirtle III is featured speaker at this year’s Creative Writing Awards Day at NCTC.

The event is set for 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, in the Little Theater on the NCTC Gainesville campus.

The awards day ceremony will recognize 50 local area writers in various categories. More than 400 entries were submitted to the NCTC creative writing contests for 2008, according to William Hood, English professor and editorial director of The April Perennial, which publishes winning entries each year.

The annual contests are for amateur writers residing in Texas and Oklahoma. Three categories and special awards for literary excellence are designated for NCTC students.

Pirtle, of Hideaway, has been in the writing business for four decades, and since 1985 he has served as editorial director for Dock­ery House Publishing in Dallas.

Pirtle has written more than 50 published books, including the award-winning XIT: The American Cowboy and The Unending Season.
