Student places first in poster Competition
Texas Woman’s University student Amy Jo Hammett of Denton received a $600 scholarship for placing first in a nationwide genomics education poster competition sponsored by LI-COR Biosciences Corporation.
The Genomics Education Poster Scholarship program is part of LI-COR Biosciences’s ongoing support of undergraduate training programs in molecular biology. The poster competition represents student research work using LI-COR’s DNA analysis system as part of an inquiry-based learning approach to undergraduate education.
Hammett, a biology senior, worked in the TWU biology department lab under the direction of Dr. Sarah McIntire, professor and biology department chairwoman, and Dr. Camelia Maier, associate professor of biology.
Regents approve promotions, tenure
The Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents recently approved promotions and tenure recommendations at its quarterly meeting June 30.
Associate Professors Dr. Mark Britt (chemistry/physics), Dr. Ellina Grigorieva (mathematics/computer science) and Dr. Young-Hoo Kwon (kinesiology) were awarded tenure. Sharon Benge, director of the TWU drama department, was promoted to professor and received tenure.
Associate Professors Dr. JoAnn Barbour (teacher education), Dr. Chris Beatty (dental hygiene), Dr. Vic Ben-Ezra (kinesiology), Dr. Gayle Hersch (occupational therapy — Houston), Dr. Judy Johnson-Russell (nursing — Dallas), Dr. AnaLouise Keating (women’s studies), Dr. Mahmoud Sadri (sociology), Dr. Stephen Souris (English, speech and foreign languages), Dr. Sally Stabb (psychology/philosophy), Dr. Mary Thompson (physical therapy — Dallas), Dr. James Williams (sociology), Dr. Philip Yang (sociology) and Dr. Deborah Young (fashion and textiles) were promoted to professor.
Associate Clinical Professor Carolyn Ray (dental hygiene) was named a clinical professor, and assistant clinical professors Dr. Johnnie Aven (occupational therapy), Elizabeth Fuentes (nursing — Dallas), Pat Jones (nursing) and Leslie Koberna (dental hygiene) were promoted to associate clinical professors.
Assistant Professors Dr. Lettie Albright (reading), Dr. Mary Bold (family studies), Dr. Sheri Dragoo (fashion and textiles), Dr. Gerald Goodman (health care administration — Houston), Dr. Brenda Haile (nursing — Houston), Dr. Mark Hamner (mathematics/computer science), Dr. Junehee Kwon (nutrition and food sciences), Dr. Huanbiao Mo (nutrition and food sciences), Dr. David Nichols (kinesiology), Dr. Yvonne Rodriguez (reading), Dr. Lene Symes (nursing - Houston), Dr. Mark Tengesdal (business/economics) and Dr. S. Sharon Wang (physical therapy — Dallas) were all promoted to the rank of associate professor and awarded tenure. Dr. Diane Gregory, assistant professor of visual arts, also was promoted to associate professor.
Clinical instructors Robin Abellera, (communication sciences and disorders), Laura Moorer-Cook (communication sciences and disorders), Faisal Aboul-Enein (nursing — Houston), Nancy McMenamy (nursing — Dallas), Rochelle Schultz (nursing — Houston) were named assistant clinical professors. Dr. Lynda Peebles was promoted to a lecturer II in the chemistry and physics department.
Several retiring faculty members were given Emeritus status by the Regents. Dr. Charlotte Keefe (education), Dr. Jean Pyfer (kinesiology), Dr. Martha Randeri (English, speech and foreign languages) and Dr. Wayne Zimmerman (mathematics/computer science) were each appointed as Professor Emeritus, and Dr. Jeannette Kernicki (nursing) was named a Clinical Professor Emerita for TWU.
Health care HR training to be offered soon
The Texas Woman’s University Office of Lifelong Learning is now offering “Human Resources for Healthcare Professionals” training for those working in human resources in a health care environment, such as a physician’s office or hospital.
“Human Resources for Healthcare Professionals” is an 80-hour, online course and the cost is $1,795. For more information or to register, visit www.twu.edu/

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to identify the types of healthcare organizations and describe the current and future states of the healthcare industry.
No prerequisites are required for the “Human Resources for Healthcare Providers” course.
Spanish training for the workplace coming up
Texas Woman’s University’s Office of Lifelong Learning is now offering “Command Spanish Training for the Workplace” for interested participants.
As an official licensed provider of “Command Spanish Inc.” language and cross-cultural training programs, TWU can offer on-site, job-specific Spanish language and cross-cultural training in such diverse areas. The courses are occupational-specific, last between eight and 24 hours and can be designed to meet a company’s specific needs.

TWU to host Lazerow Memorial Lecture July 13
The effects of “24/7” media and information availability on the quality of life will be explored as the Texas Woman’s University School of Information Studies hosts the Institute for Scientific Information’s Samuel Lazerow Memorial Lecture.
The lecture, scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 13, will take place in room 313 of the Arts and Sciences Building, located on Oakland Avenue on TWU’s Denton campus. The lecture, titled “Information and the Quality of Life: Environmentalism for the Information Age,” will feature Dr. David Levy, a professor in The Information School of the University of Washington.
TWU to showcase online degree programs July 15
Texas Woman’s University will showcase 11 online degree programs, including the new resident nurse to bachelor of science in nursing degree, during a Saturday, July 15, information session on the TWU Denton campus.
TWU offers the following degrees primarily online: a bachelor of general studies, a bachelor of science in health studies, a bachelor of science in nursing for RNs, an executive MBA, a master of arts in teaching, a master of science in family studies, a master of library science, a master of science in health studies, a master of science in institutional administration (nutrition), a post-professional master’s in occupational therapy and a professional level master’s in occupational therapy to certified occupational therapy assistants.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Administration and Conference Tower (ACT) located on Administration Drive between Oakland Avenue and Bell Avenue in Denton.
Information sessions are scheduled until noon and free parking is available throughout the Denton campus.
