TWU embarks on oral history project

The Texas Woman’s University History and Government Department is looking for TWU alumni to participate in the Pioneers Oral History Project.

The project is associated with TWU oral history courses, which teach students the theoretical and practical skills needed to conduct useful, scholarly oral histories.

Interviews completed in the project are transcribed and then preserved in multimedia and traditional archive formats. All work within the project follows the highest standards of the Oral History Association, the national professional organization of oral history practitioners.

Renovated clinic opens

The Texas Woman’s University Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic is hosting a celebration on Friday showcasing its renovated clinic.

The event, which is open to the public, will be from 2 to 5 p.m. in the clinic, Room 601 of the Multipurpose Classroom and Laboratory Building, located at the corner of Bell Avenue and College Street.

At the Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic , TWU communication sciences and disorders graduate students work with clients under the supervision of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association-certified and Texas-licensed speech and language pathologists and audiologists.

Exhibit shows women’s roles in science

The roles women have played in science and the invention, creation and use of technology are the focus of an exhibit scheduled for March 5 through April 9 at the Blagg-Huey Library at Texas Woman’s University.

The exhibit, located on the first floor of the library, is free and open to the public. Curated by Kimberly L. Johnson of the library’s Woman’s Collection staff, the exhibit includes posters, books and photographs. For library hours and directions, visit www.twu.edu/library/hours.asp or call 940-898-3701.

The library also will feature “From Magellan to Beckman: Science and Technology at Work,” a speech by retired Navy Cmdr. Trish Beckman, who navigated around the world as part of a Boeing 777 flight crew. The lecture will take place at 1 p.m. April 7 in the Joyce Thompson Lecture Hall, Room 101 of the Blagg-Huey Library. Seating is limited, and reservations should be made by calling 940-898-3751.

Beckman spent 28 years on active duty in the Navy, and she was the first woman to qualify as a crew member on an F-15. She also was the first American woman to qualify as a crew member on an F/A-18.

 

 

Sapphire to speak

Best-selling author Sapphire, who wrote the book that inspired the Academy Award-nominated film Precious, is among the featured speakers for Texas Woman’s University’s Cultural Connections Conference on Thursday and Friday.

Registration for the conference costs $20 for the general public and $15 for TWU students, staff and faculty. The registration deadline is today, and on-site registration costs $25 for the general public and $20 for TWU students, staff and faculty. Sapphire’s poetry, fiction and essays have been translated into 11 languages and adapted for the stage in several countries. She will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The second featured speaker is Marie Diaz, a motivational speaker, trainer and CEO of Pursuit of Excellence Inc., a Texas-based human resources consulting company. Diaz will speak at 9 a.m. Friday.

The final featured speaker is Joshua Fredenburg, an author, “Generation Y” expert and TV commentator.He will speak at 11:45 a.m. Friday.
