UNT Big Give raises funds for Haiti relief

The Student Government Association at the University of North Texas is coordinating a campuswide initiative called UNT Big Give, which is aimed at raising funds for Haiti earthquake relief. The effort launched earlier this month and will continue through March 21.

SGA President Dakota Carter said the program’s goal is to raise $40,000 for Haiti.

Donations will be collected throughout university activities, including men’s home basketball games, concerts and events.

Spanish media center to present symposium

The Center for Spanish Language Media at UNT will present a symposium focusing on the relationships between the U.S. and Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia on March 4.

“Venezuela, Ecuador, Boliva: The Rogue Nations of Latin America” will discuss the impact of the media and democracy in the three nations.

The free program will be in Room 184 of UNT’s Radio, TV, Film and Performing Arts Building, on the corner of Welch and Chestnut streets.

Cornel West to speak Thursday at UNT

Cornel West, Princeton University professor and civil rights activist, will speak at UNT as part of the university’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Thursday.

West has written more than 20 books, including his 1993 best-selling book, Race Matters, an analysis of racism in American democracy, was published in 1993.

West will conduct an informal discussion with students from 5 to 6 p.m., and his keynote address will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium Building, 1401 W. Hickory St.

Students can receive two free tickets with their student IDs. Faculty, staff and non-UNT students can purchase tickets for $5; and general admission tickets are $15. For more information, contact Hope Dewberry, director of special projects, at 940-565-4373 or hope.dewberry@unt.edu .

 

 

Libraries collecting donations for shelter

The UNT Libraries Community Service Committee is gathering donations for the Denton Animal Shelter through March 15. Donation boxes are located at each library on campus.

Items needed include towels, newspapers, tennis balls, washable dog toys, wand-type cat toys, washable plastic ball-type cat toys, natural dog and cat treats, quality canned dog and cat food, and washing detergent.

The committee is also collecting monetary donations to aid the shelter’s medical fund, which pays for the care of sick and injured animals. Checks can be made to city of Denton, with “Animal Shelter Medical Fund” in the memo line.

Freshman application deadline is Monday

The UNT fall 2010 freshman application deadline is Monday. Students can apply via the Texas Common Application, at www.applytexas.org.

Official transcripts and entrance exam scores are not due Monday, but should be submitted as soon as possible.

Emerald Eagle Scholar deadline is Monday

Students interested in becoming Emerald Eagle Scholars at UNT must submit their applications for admission by Monday in order to be considered for the program.

The program provides tuition, fees and mentoring to academically talented students with high financial need.

Those interested need to apply to UNT via a Texas common application, which can be found at www.applytexas.org. Students must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid no later than March 31.

College of Business dean receives award

Dr. Finley Graves, dean of UNT’s College of Business, has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Federation of Schools of Accountancy’s Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Merit Award.

The award honors an outstanding contribution by a faculty member in a post-baccalaureate professional program of an FSA member school.

Graves received a plaque and a $2,500 check earlier this month at a seminar in New Mexico.

 

 

Library sciences group honors professor

Dr. Ana D. Cleveland, regents professor of library and information sciences at UNT, has received the 2010 Award for Teaching Excellence in the Field of Library and Information Science Education from the Association for Library and Information Science Education.

She was presented the award during the annual conference in Boston. The award is given to an educator who has shown evidence of regular and sustained excellence in teaching library and information science.
