Magazine lists UNT as military-friendly school

G.I. Jobs magazine recently named the University of North Texas to its annual list of military-friendly schools.

The list honors colleges, universities and trade schools that embrace U.S. military veterans as students. The schools are selected based on efforts to recruit and retain active-duty members of the military and veterans, results of such recruitment, and academic accreditations.

During the 2009-10 academic year, UNT had an estimated 1,200 veterans enrolled as students. Also last year, UNT opened a Veterans Center to serve the university’s large population of military veterans.

The center is located in the University Union and helps students navigate the transition from military duty to college.

Wilson named Fellow in chemistry society

The American Chemical Society has named Angela Wilson, UNT professor of chemistry, to its 2010 Class of Fellows.

Wilson, who also serves as co-director for UNT’s Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling, was among 192 distinguished scientists to be honored at the society’s fall meeting Monday in Boston.

The nonprofit society has more than 161,000 members representing all fields of chemistry and is the world’s largest science society. The ACS Fellows program recognizes the society’s members for their outstanding achievements in science and service to the group.

Wilson, who joined UNT in 2000, developed and leads the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates internship program, now in its seventh year, for the Department of Chemistry, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Physical Chemistry.

Wilson is also a national associate of the National Academies and served as U.S. chairwoman for the 2006 Chinese-American Frontiers of Science Program.

Education endowment picks Fossey as chair

Richard Fossey, a professor in UNT’s Department of Teacher Education and Administration, has been selected as the first Dr. Mike Moses Chair in Educational Administration. His five-year term will begin this fall.

The endowed position was funded by Don Buchholz, a University of North Texas alumnus and UNT regent. Buchholz also is the founder of Southwest Securities Inc., which established a scholarship endowment to benefit students in UNT’s superintendent certification program last year.

The position is designed to reward an exceptional faculty member for his or her scholarship. In addition, the funding provides resources to build UNT’s educational administration programs and bring increased recognition to the school’s graduate programs.

The position is named for Mike Moses, who has been an educator in Texas for more than 30 years. Moses was the state’s Commissioner of Education from 1995 to 1999, deputy chancellor for systems operations at the Texas Tech University system from 1999 to 2001, and general superintendent of the Dallas school district from 2001 to 2004. He currently serves as the senior educational adviser for Raise Your Hand Texas and the Center for Reform of School Systems.

Fossey has been a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration since 2006. He also is a senior policy researcher in UNT’s Center for the Study of Education Reform.

APA bestows award on psychology professor

Randall J. Cox, UNT professor of psychology and director of the Psychology Clinic, recently received the Distinguished Contributions to the Advancement of Disability Issues in Psychology Award from the American Psychology Association.

The national association’s Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology presents the award each year to an APA member who has worked to advance the role of psychological principles to enhance the lives of and promote the inclusion of disabled people in society.

Cox received the award during the association’s annual convention Aug. 12-15, and presented a lecture at the Aug. 14 awards ceremony.

Cox was chairman of the Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology in 2009 and was a committee member from January 2007 through December 2008. Since 2007, he has served on the safety review board for the Dallas VA Medical Center’s spinal cord injury research project. He was a staff psychologist in the medical center’s Spinal Cord Injury Unit for more than three years before he became a UNT faculty member and director of the Psychology Clinic in October 2007.

He has made numerous presentations on psychological adjustment after a spinal cord injury, disability issues in diversity training and psychological aspects of chronic illness.

In addition to teaching in the Department of Psychology and directing the UNT Psychology Clinic, Cox is the interim director of clinical training for his department.

Printing services team wins Best of Show

Materials produced by the University of North Texas Printing and Mail Services team were named Best of Show at the In-Print Competition at the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association conference in Albuquerque, N.M., in June.

The In-Print Competition, sponsored by the association and In-Plant Graphics magazine, is the only printing contest exclusively for in-house printers. In addition to the Best of Show award, UNT won 10 awards for materials including booklets, flyers, posters, greeting cards, stationery and brochures. The award-winning materials were produced by the 40-member Printing and Mail Services staff, led by director Jimmy Friend.

For the Best of Show in digitally printed pieces, judges unanimously chose UNT’s special project booklet for the College of Business’s New Building Campaign. The 32-page, wire-bound book features architectural drawings of the UNT Business Leadership Building, which is scheduled for completion in 2011.

Since 2004, UNT Printing and Mail Services has won 38 awards at the In-Print Competition, and was featured on the July cover of In-Plant Graphics.
