Debate champ passes on wisdom
In a clear, booming voice, Kuntal Cholera argued two sides of a difficult argument. Is it murder to kill a terrorist? Does the end justify the means? It’s an example of opposing viewpoints that debate students likely will face in arguing positions with ethical and moral dilemmas, he told his audience.

Grand experience: UNT offers multigenerational insight

DRC/Barron Ludlum
Bryce Hewitt, 10, makes an approximation of a comet out of charcoal, sand, Karo syrup and dry ice during Grandparents University on Thursday at the University of North Texas.

As Lisa Stout walked into the crowded dorm room with fresh linens, she placed a pillow on each stark bed and kissed her two boys goodbye. They were off to college. But the boys, although related, aren’t regular college students. There’s a 60-year age gap between them. One is her father, and the other is her son.

University of North Texas professor Jincheng Du holds a piece of bioactive glass on Wednesday.

The term regeneration may seem like science fiction to some, but researchers at the University of North Texas are hoping their material research of bioactive glass can help other research studies in using glass to regenerate tissues, fibers and load-bearing bones. Bioactive glass is being used in facial implantations, middle-ear implants and dentistry, but the applications are limited because little is known about the complex structure of bioactive glass, said Jincheng Du, professor of materials science and engineering at UNT.

At Camp Communicate, it’s about kid-to-kid interaction
Several young buckaroos hunkered down at an encampment a few hundred yards from roaming buffalo, intent on a cowboy holding a rope. Under the cowboy’s guidance, each of the youngsters all had a turn, twisting the rope and waving it overhead on the Meritt Bois D’Arc Buffalo Ranch in Denton. It may look like another summer day camp for young children, but 8-year-old Miles Cole is doing something surprising. He’s standing with strangers and interacting with them.
