DENTON ISD

Local students’ art to be shown at Capitol

Students from three Denton school district elementary campuses have been honored by the Texas Art Education Association and will have their works of art displayed at the state Capitol.

Rachel French of Ginnings Elementary School, Briesa Middleton of Houston Elementary School and Lindsay Warren of Stephens Elementary School will have artwork on display as part of the association’s Youth Art Month state exhibit.

Denton was one of 50 school districts selected to participate in the exhibit, based on their commitment and support of art education. The students’ work can be seen in the South Extension of the Capitol building during March 6-13.

Providence Elementary School

Dinner to raise funds to help injured teacher

Providence Elementary School staff will host a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the school cafetorium to support second-grade teacher Daniel Rhynes and his family.

Rhynes and his three children were injured in an automobile accident Christmas Eve. Rhynes and his children are all undergoing physical therapy as they recover from their injuries. His wife, Myleah Rhynes, is a teacher for the visually impaired in the Denton school district.

Providence teachers, staff and volunteers from the school have organized the spaghetti dinner as a way to help the Rhynes family with any financial strains the accident may have caused. The dinner will include homemade spaghetti, breadsticks, salad, a drink and a choice of dessert. Culinary arts students from the LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex are making and donating vegetarian spaghetti sauce for the event.

Tickets are $5 and will include entertainment from Providence students and staff. The event will also feature an auction and bake sale with all proceeds going directly to the Rhynes family.

Paloma Creek Elementary School

School to host Black History Month program

Paloma Creek Elementary School will host its annual Black History Month Celebration program at 1:45 p.m. Friday in the school cafetorium.

Among the program’s highlights are musical performances by the Ryan boys’ choir and Paloma Creek fifth-graders, a re-enactment of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and readings of poetry by Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.

Denton High School

Jazz program to host spring concert March 4

The Denton High School jazz studies program will host its annual spring jazz concert at 7 p.m. March 4 at the school auditorium. Admission is free.

Jazz musicians from the middle school, high school and university levels will share the stage, joining together for a single performance in the night’s grand finale.

Denton High’s Lab Band One and newly formed Lab Band Two will perform as well as host performances by this spring’s special guests: the Calhoun Middle School Jazz Ensemble and the Five O’clock Lab Band from the University of North Texas.

Grad Night fundraiser at Pizza Inn tonight

Denton High School will host a fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at Pizza Inn, 501 W. University Drive, benefiting Grad Night 2010.

Patrons who tell a cashier that they are supporting DHS Grad Night will have a portion of their bill donated toward the school fundraiser.

In another fundraiser, supporters can purchase Dallas Stars tickets at a reduced price for matches at 2 p.m. March 14 or 6 p.m. March 21. From every ticket, $10 will be donated back to Grad Night. To purchase tickets, contact Megan Walker at 214-387-5514 or mwalker@dallasstars.com

Ryan High School

Ryan High recognizes students of the month

Ryan High School has named its February students and Raiders of the month. The students are recognized by the Ryan student body and staff for their outstanding display of school pride and character.

The Students of the Month are freshman Kathy Modrow, sophomore Chris Hoye, junior Sara Livingston and senior Hannah Black.

The Raiders of the Month are freshman Shelby Sylvera, sophomore Melody Evans, junior Katie Pritchard and senior Jake Fuller.

 

 

Guyer High School

Guyer student invited to join scholars society

Mark A. Burroughs Jr., a Guyer High School student, was recently invited for membership into the National Society of High School Scholars for achieving superior academic excellence.

Burroughs joins a group formed in 2002 that encourages high school scholars to apply their talents and vision for the betterment of themselves and the world. Benefits of membership include scholarship opportunities, academic competitions and other free events.

 

 

SELWYN COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

School hosts annual International Week

Selwyn College Preparatory School is celebrating its annual International Week through Friday. The weeklong celebration will come to a close with the International Night Celebration at 5 p.m. Friday.

The final evening will offer entertainment including a Chinese lion dance by the Chin Woo Performers, an Italian dinner and various class presentations. Donations will be collected at the Friday event for Haiti relief efforts and Heifer International, a nonprofit organization working to end hunger and poverty, and promote care for the Earth.

The week kicked off with opening ceremonies Monday. Activities through the week feature guest speakers who share information about their home countries and customs with Selwyn students. Students also take part in cultural activities such as dance and cuisine.

This year’s theme is the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” At opening ceremonies, a flag representing each country being studied was presented, and the Golden Rule was quoted in a variety of languages.

 

 

School’s open house runs throughout March

Selwyn College Preparatory School will host an open house throughout March. Prospective students and their families are invited to tour the campus, visit classrooms and receive program and registration information for the 2010-11 school year.

Prospective students also are invited to spend a day at Selwyn and attend classes in the Lower, Middle or Upper Schools.

In addition to Selwyn’s college preparatory curriculum, which includes honors and Advanced Placement courses, the small-class environment promotes lifelong learning, engaged leaders and responsible citizens.
