Blanton, Harpool schools host meeting Thursday
All parents whose children will be attending either Blanton Elementary School or Harpool Middle School in August are invited to attend a special assembly to “Meet the Principal” and to help organize the schools’ first parent-teacher associations.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the McNair Elementary School cafeteria, 1212 Hickory Creek Road.
Elections for the nominating committee and bylaw committees will be conducted.

Denton High School
Hyatt named top social studies teacher in Texas
Carol Hyatt, social studies teacher at Denton High School, recently received the Frank Kemerer Award as Top Social Studies Teacher of Texas, an honor presented by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals and Texas School Administrators’ Legal Digest.
Hyatt was presented the award on Tuesday in front of her senior economics class by Jim Walsh, who founded the award in honor of Kemerer, his colleague.
The two have written several public school law books together.
The first runner-up was Beth Hughes, also a social studies teacher at Denton High.
Hyatt has taught history, government, geography and economics during her 18-year career. She first taught at Lindsay High School and then started teaching at Denton High School in 1996, where she teaches Advanced Placement and regular economics.
Yearbook earns top rating at convention
Denton High School received the highest rating in yearbook production, the Award of Distinguished Merit, at the Interscholastic League Press Conference convention in Austin. The 2007 volume also received three individual state honors.
Senior Lucy Croft received a fourth-place Individual Achievement Award for her work in the student life section. Graduate Rashaana Matra came in fourth place for her sports pages, and graduate Jason Hoke received fourth place for his academic pages.
Only six 4A schools were recognized in each category for individual achievement. The 2008 yearbook is available for $65 plus tax at the high school.

Sisters receive livestock show scholarships
Alyssa Ryna Holman Looney and Robyn Alysabeth Holman Looney, both graduating seniors from Denton High School, were each recently awarded four-year, $5,000 Youth Livestock Show Scholarships sponsored by the State Fair of Texas. The $1,250 annual scholarship is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 grade-point average.
Their parents are Floyd and Robin Looney of Denton.
Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to academically talented students who graduate from area high schools. Both girls participated in the State Fair of Texas youth livestock shows from 2004 to 2007. They showed animals in the youth beef heifer shows and won numerous prizes.
Advanced Technology Complex
ATC media class plans ‘Feature Fest’
The media tech students at LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex are hosting a “Feature Fest” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29, in the ATC Conference Room, 1504 Long Road.
Under the supervision of media tech instructor Chris Vochoska, the students will present an awards night and show about 10 videos that they have produced.
The participating students include Sarah Agens, Eric Antonowicz, Azael Barrera, Jonathan Carroll, Will Cooksey, Todd Denson, Zach Gamet, Jordan Lockhart, Tyler Napier, Cesar Ochoa, Alessandra Romero, Madison Slavens, Preston Barta, Scott Hardesty, Chance Maggard, Makayla Price, William Ruffu, Joseph West, Eric Martino and Kaitlyn Pound.
Advertising design students earn 14 honors
The advertising design department of the Advanced Technology Complex recently had 14 students advance from district to state with their graphics projects. They competed in the state Skills USA contest in Corpus Christi.
From Denton High School, the students who placed at state were Nick Baird, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Samantha Cogley, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Bess Whitby, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Spencer Eagleton, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Makayla Price, first place, Texas State Superior Award; and Fred Warzwick, second place, Texas State Excellent.
From Guyer High School, the students who placed at state were Hannah Pugh, first place, Texas State Superior Award; and Katherine Whitmore, second place, Texas State Excellent.
From Ryan High School, the students who placed are Alexandria Albini, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Kellie Hill, first place, Texas State Superior Award; Lauren Pels, second place, Texas State Excellent; Daniel Sanchez, second place, Texas State Excellent, and John-Paul McHargue, third place, Texas State Very Good.
From Krum High School, Caitlin Christian placed first and received Texas State Superior Award.
Cosmetology students’ creations win top honors
The cosmetology department of the Advanced Technology Complex recently had 10 students advance to state competition with their cosmetology projects. They competed in the state Skills USA contest in Corpus Christi.
From Denton High School, the students who placed at state were Brandy Perez, first place in the Evening Hairstyling Photo Panel, and Jennifer Ramirez, first place in the Haircutting Photo Panel Competition.
From Guyer High School, the students who placed at state were Elizabeth Puga, Texas Best of Show in Salon Innovative; Cristina Maldonado, first place in the Acrylic Nail Photo Panel; Ashlee Nolet, first place in Makeup Artistry Photo Panel; and Denisha Frazier, first place in the Up-Do Hair Competition Photo Panel.
From Ryan High School, the students who placed are Maggie Tischler, first place in Fantasy Hairstyling; Tiffany Dutton, second place in Nail Art; Megan Seals, first place in the Pedicure Photo Panel; and Chriselda DeJesus, first place in the Highlighting Color Photo Panel.
Cosmetology instructors include Brenda Buster, Linda Dalton and Katrina Chancellor.

Student participates in national ceremony
Evers Park Elementary School student Hannah Winn, daughter of Lyn Winn of Denton, recently took part in a ceremony where she changed the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Her trip was part of a WorldStrides tour program.

Orchestra students place in UIL competition
Guyer High Orchestra students recently received top ratings in the UIL competition and will now compete at the state level later this month in Austin.
The students who received superior ratings and will go on to the state UIL competition in May include the following soloists: Daniel Pickett, violin; Sophia Tanner, violin; Juno Ahn, violin; Jason Nam, violin; Jessica Horner, cello; Joshua Kim, cello; Kathy Wang, violin; Joe Klinect, string bass; Sang-Bin Kwon, violin; and Joel Senay, string bass.
The orchestra duets include Annie Frodeman and Maya Frodeman, violin duet; Kathy Wang and Joe Klinect, violin and string bass duet; and Junho Ahn and Sang-Bin Kwon, violin duet.
The Guyer orchestra director is Michelle Brians and assistant director is Jeremy Atkins.

Band students win top music awards at UIL
Ryan High School band students, who recently competed in the UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest in Azle, earned “First Division/Superior” ratings and qualified for state competition.

Fifth-grader wins state award in music memory
Immaculate Conception Catholic School fifth-grader Jason Jezek took the Class A state championship in music memory during the recent Private School Interscholastic Association State Academic Meet at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
Immaculate Conception students did well against the 111 schools competing from throughout the state. Immaculate Conception won the District 2A academic championship this year, advancing more than 30 students to the state level. Other Immaculate Conception students placing at the state level included Christian Luke, second place, Maps, Graphs and Charts 6; Jillian Josefsberg, fourth place, Creative Writing 1; Scott Wolf, fourth place (tie), Listening 7; Jessica Riney, fourth place, Listening 8; Casey Estorque, fourth place, Ready Writing 7; Meg Garvert, fourth place, Spelling 8; and Nick Murphy, sixth place, Vocabulary 8.
Students win awards in community art show
Immaculate Conception Catholic School students took two third-place awards plus a special award, among other honors, during the recent 2008 North Central Texas College Spring Community Art Show. Students received prizes, including monetary awards and art supplies. The students are under the direction of art teacher Martha Falsetta.
Monica Hogan placed third in the 3-5 division, Trace Wilcox took third in the 6-8 division and Mary Baker received a special award for animal art.
Students receiving honorable mention included Caroline Costilla, Victoria Given, Brandy Sorrells, Justin Reinhart, Malynda Golightly, Alex Villa, Victor Marquez, Ashleigh Wolf, Tyler Will, Hailey Lopez, Vanessa Aguilar, Mary Baker, Shane Sirignano, Megan Wood, Logan Trachta, Casey Estorque, John Baker, Jozey Jezek and Meg Garvert.
