Breakfast Kiwanis Club awards scholarships
The Denton Breakfast Kiwanis recently awarded a total of $2,800 in scholarships at its sixth annual awards breakfast.
Recipients were: Josh Compton and Ryan Kercheval, University of North Texas; Jennifer Murray, Denton High School; Jessie San Miguel, Guyer High School; Daniel Such, Ryan High School; Rachel Barnes, Liberty Christian School; Michael King, Liberty Christian School; and Sarah Owens, Immaculate Conception Catholic School.
In addition to maintaining high grade-point averages, all eight recipients are active leaders in the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis-sponsored youth organizations at their respective schools.
A contribution of $1,200 also was made to the Dwain Vance Memorial Scholarship, which supports students in teacher education programs at UNT. Vance was a longtime member of DBK.
The annual awards ceremony was held May 13 at Luby’s Cafeteria.
DENTON ISD
School day ends early in last week of classes
All Denton school district students will be dismissed early on the last day of school, Thursday, June 4.
Secondary students will have early release Tuesday through Thursday, June 2-4.
Most high school students will take final exams Monday through Thursday, June 1-4. During this time, all high school students will have open campus for lunch. Seniors will take some exams earlier.
Bus times for the final week of school will be: for elementary students, regular time except for 1 p.m. June 4; middle school students, 1 p.m. June 2-3 and 1:30 p.m. June 4; high school students, noon June 2-3 and about 1:45 p.m. June 4.
Fred Moore High School’s graduation will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, in the school gymnasium.
Graduation for the three main high schools will be on Friday, June 5, at the University of North Texas Coliseum, with Ryan High School at 1 p.m., Denton High School at 4:30 p.m. and Guyer High School at 8 p.m.
Guyer High School
Four students to get their diplomas early
Guyer High School is hosting an early graduation for four seniors at 2 p.m. Monday, June 1, in the school’s auditorium.
Julia Agawu, Joe Barb IV, Kenton Jackson and Garrett Montgomery recently qualified for the Texas state track meet and will be attending the event on graduation day, June 5.
A reception for the graduates and their families will be held immediately after the ceremony in the career counseling center.

Student selected for Best of Texas award
Guyer senior Kristen Carbonaro was recently awarded the Best of Texas Award from the Texas Career and Technology Council in Austin.
Carbonaro has been enrolled in the Denton school district’s health science program for four years and ranks in the top 7 percentile of her senior class. Throughout her high school career, she has attended classes at Guyer and LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex.
After high school, she plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos and major in pre-dental and biology.
“Kristen is a very deserving student recipient for this award and scholarship. She is a high achiever, self-motivated, and goal-oriented student,” said Jeanie Bragg, a Guyer career counselor, in a news release.
Hodge Elementary School
Students take part in ‘Tour of Denton’
Hodge Elementary School second-graders recently participated in a “Tour of Denton” field trip to learn about the town’s history and city government.
Students visited with Mayor Mark Burroughs in the City Council chambers and participated in a mock council meeting.
Participants visited the police and fire departments, Wells Fargo Bank and the Courthouse on the Square.
Field trip participants came from the classrooms of teachers Isabel Cano, Diana Chipman, Benita Eberhart, Don Holt, Julie Stinson and Suzann Thompson.
Rivera Elementary School
Students, educators featured in book
Photographs of Rivera Elementary School students and educators are featured in the book Achieving Literacy Success With English Language Learners.
Rivera students photographed for the book were: Ahmad Masoudi, Tavania Newton, Emma Dunworth, Luis Guzman, Jordan Kinsey, Dominque Rubio, Brendan Yarborough, Melissa Espinosa, Ebony Martinez, Alexis Solchenberger, Hagar Hudspeth, Mehmet Arslan, Tavian Rucker, Diego Pena, Chynna Sams, Tamara Manuel, Paulina Flores, Debanhi Bosquez, Alaa Babiker, Kelly Cox and Eric Molina.
Rivera staff members in the book are Robert Gonzalez, principal; Roshaunda Thomas, assistant principal; Ashleigh Roberts, reading recovery teacher; Cynthia Woodson, STAR teacher; Jana Gordon, kindergarten teacher; and Taheerah Flores, kindergarten teacher.
The book was edited by Cynthia Rodriguez-Eagle, a lecturer in the reading department at Texas Woman’s University. Her research interests include early childhood intervention for bilingual students and English language learners. Rodriguez-Eagle’s university students mentor and work with Rivera first-grade students and teachers.
Mike Mattingly, Denton assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and staff development, was selected to write a review of the book for the Reading Recovery Journal.

Ryan High School
Latin teacher selected for textbook review
Ryan High School Latin teacher Vincent McGee was recently selected by the Cambridge University Press to make recommendations for the new edition of the Cambridge Latin Course textbook.
McGee has used the Cambridge Latin Course text in 12 out of 17 years of his teaching career. He has attended numerous Cambridge Latin training seminars, Advanced Placement Latin seminars and American Classical League conferences.
He is the Ryan High world languages department chairman and serves as a whiz quiz sponsor. He earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of North Texas. He believes it is useful for all students to learn Latin.
“Latin is a gateway language, allowing easier access to learning any of the romance languages,” McGee said in a news release. “Latin is a key to unlock the door of literature, history and the arts.”
