Meal prices increasing for next school year
Meal prices for students in the Denton school district are increasing for 2008-09.
At elementary schools, the new lunch price will be $2.50, compared to last year’s price of $2.25. Breakfasts will cost $1.10, up from $1.
Lunches at secondary schools will be $2.75, up from last year’s price of $2.50. Breakfast prices will increase to $1.35, from $1.25.
Free or reduced meal prices are available for students who qualify. For more information, call 940-369-0270.
Spokeswoman named president of TAPE
Sharon Cox, director of communications and community relations for the Denton school district, has been elected president of Texas Association of Partners in Education.
Cox has been with the district since 1999. She is in charge of school partnerships and the Adopt-A-School program as well as media relations, school volunteers, Grandparents in Public Schools and other community relations programs.
Prior to joining the district, Cox held several editing and writing positions with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, including founding and editing Class Acts, a magazine for students. She is the former director of community relations and communications for the Grand Prairie school district and past president of Texas School Public Relations Association.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and her master’s degree from the University of North Texas.
Formerly known as the Texas School Volunteer Program, the Texas Association of Partners in Education now has a membership of more than 250 volunteers, school community liaisons, business officials and educators. The purpose of the organization is to provide leadership to schools, businesses and communities and to assist public schools in building partnerships to enhance student success. The association’s headquarters are in Austin.

Math teacher earns Michigan State award
Bill Finch, a math teacher at Denton High School, recently accepted the 2008 Green Apple Award, given by the Michigan State University engineering department at its graduation ceremony. He was nominated by Michigan State graduate Saurav Shrestha, a former student.
The award is initiated by a graduating senior and is given to a teacher who has been a major influence in encouraging students toward degrees in engineering.
Ryan High School
Teachers chosen to score AP exams
Two Ryan High School teachers were selected to score the College Board’s Advanced Placement tests.
Calculus teacher Mark Kiraly scored the AP calculus exam in Kansas City, Mo.
History teacher Georgianne Burlage was selected to score the AP world history exam in Fort Collins, Colo.
According to the AP program, the teachers selected for this honor are among the top high school and college educators in the United States, Canada and abroad.
