Two friends beset by challenges in teen author’s work

02:47 PM CST on Friday, November 27, 2009

A Ponder High School sophomore is hosting her first book signing at the Denton Hastings on Saturday.

A.M. Hawkins began writing Two Visitors in Destrovia: The Journey when she was 12.

Now she is 15 with her first published book and two more in the works.

Two Visitors is about a rabbit, who wants his own land, and a skunk, who is seeking citizenship in Destrovia, and how their friendship grows through their adventure together, Hawkins said.

The rabbit’s character was inspired by Hawkins’ own pet rabbit.

She said when her rabbit, Bunnicula, was two years old he was diagnosed with head tilt and wasn’t expected to live long.

“He was like my best friend,” she said.

Hawkins decided to channel her energy into writing.

Her interest in writing began while she was being home-schooled during her middle school years and she took a creative writing class.

She is inspired by adventure stories such as The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor.

The signing will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hastings, 2311 Colorado Blvd. For more information, call 940-565-1764.
