‘Pirates’ poised to walk the plank
10:48 AM CST on Thursday, March 11, 2010
The most tender-hearted of all pirates will sail into a Gilbert and Sullivan sunset this weekend when Music Theatre of Denton closes the comic opera.
Pirates of Penzance is about a young man, Frederic, indentured to a gang of pirates until his 21st birthday. He hopes to end his servitude with a new life with the dewy young Mabel, but learns that he was born on leap year. He has to stay aboard with the pirates another 63 years.
Heartache? This is the work of William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. That spells bumpy, ridiculous plots set to music that sounds light and fluffy, but takes an able singer to whip through them.
Johnny Williams reprises the role of Maj. Gen. Stanley for the third time, and Michael Rausch returns to the Denton stage as the leading man, Frederic. Meredith Browning plays Frederic’s love interest, Mabel, and Jaime King plays the Pirate King. John Evarts directs.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. in Denton. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $10 for students.
