Citywide program seeks to engage readers of all ages
09:30 AM CST on Thursday, March 1, 2007
The functions of reading and joining a social group would seem to clash, but a local literacy organization hopes to create a happy pair.
Denton Reads is seeking participants of all ages for its series of upcoming book discussion groups. It is open to all Denton residents and is designed to promote literacy. Sponsored by the libraries at University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, the Denton Public Library and the Denton school district, its committee will sponsor several book discussion groups, scheduled to meet through March at various locations.
These activities are a preface to Earth Day, April 22, when author and activist Julia Butterfly Hill visits Denton to discuss her book Legacy of Luna. The book chronicles Hill’s story, which began in 1997 when she climbed 180 feet up a redwood tree and stayed in the tree for 738 days.
