Festival registers voters, promotes prophylactics

09:56 AM CDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008

Makalani Jones said he decided to bring together the pedestrian youth voter registration drive with a little titillation thanks to an event called Freaknik.

Freaknik is a big spring break bash in Atlanta that attracts students from historically black schools like Howard University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. Like collegiate spring break bashes everywhere, Freaknik features dancing, drinking and partying — which includes all the attendant naughtiness.

“I sat back, relaxed and started thinking about issues,” said Jones, a musician who came north when New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. “I started thinking: ‘MTV. Rock the vote. Freaknik. Rock the vote.’ Vote-nik is a fusion of two ideas, voter registration and condom awareness. It’s both timely and controversial.”

Jones said he aims to attract young people who enjoy music festivals. They’ll be able to register to vote, and they can also get some condom awareness education from Lady Love Cares, a company that vends intimate products. The vendor won’t be selling items in the park, but will have a catalog available. The company will distribute condoms and information about how to use them properly.

The festival will include music by Jones’ band, Makalani Movement; five hip-hop acts; a Denton-based rock group, Paper Airplane; and Led & the Love Company, with its classic R&B and blues.
