Ornate hardware merits closer look
09:25 AM CDT on Thursday, July 17, 2008
Bayless-Selby House Museum Curator Robyn Lee focuses her next Victorian-era lecture and tour on something that continues to interest those who attend the museum.
“I discovered that several of our guests were fascinated with the hardware,” Lee said, referring to the metal handles, latches, locks, hinges, etc., on furniture that is ornately Victorian in design.
“A few of the visitors never thought they would be interested in a piece of metal that has decoration on it,” she said. “Some of the males of the species were very intrigued.”
It is the latest installment in her ongoing “If These Walls Could Talk …” lecture and tour series, which examines every available component of Victorian-era living.
The purpose of this series, of course, isn’t simply to meditate on something beautiful from the past that has no modern bearing. Lee said she hopes her information has an effect on how tour visitors decorate their homes and shop for furniture — given that antique and estate sale shopping are common.
“It can enliven our lives today, and that’s what it’s about,” Lee said.
