Parks department offers variety of camps

The list of good times your kids can have this summer would reach across town.
The Denton Parks and Recreation department, Greater Denton Arts Council, Texas Woman’s University and University of North Texas are offering perhaps as many different youth camps and programs as there are children to attend them.
“We just have so many different varieties to feasibly meet everyone’s needs,” said Amanda Green, Denton Parks and Recreation superintendent of recreation, adding that the city’s long list of camps, which include half- and full-day itineraries, are multiple in theme. Most of the camps cater to kids between the ages of 4 and 12, though there are many programs for other age ranges.
Green said the department maintains a minimum staff-to-child ratio of 1 to 17, which keeps activity situations manageable. If the staff count runs low, they hire more. The typical camp runs three to four days, and features activities such as arts and crafts, field trips, swimming, carnival games, movies and karaoke. With the exception of “The Ultimate Campout” — a four-day trip to Oklahoma’s Turner Falls Park in July — all programs are held at Denton schools and recreation centers.
The camp schedules and their eligibility details are designed to allow a kid to bounce from program to another.
“It isn’t unusual to have parents ‘flip’ camps for their kids,” she said. “You can go back and forth, and have your children’s interests for the summer met.”
Those interests, of course, don’t always have to include camps or camp-oriented fun. The department also offers sports, karate, ballet and tap classes; drawing workshops; cheerleading programs; and then cycling, yoga, weightlifting and cardio exercise sessions with versions designed for younger people.
“Pretty much anything that a family is looking for, we have a way of meeting that need,” Green said.
