Bach Society takes a trip to the lighter side on Sunday09:58 AM CDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008
For Mother’s Day, the Denton Bach Society has picked a concert full of lighter, joyful music by a handful of composers.
The Bach Society always stages a concert on Mother’s Day weekend, and this year, the program features 16th-century chansons, performed in small ensembles who present songs by Claudin de Sermisy, Roland de Lassus, Claude Le Jeune and Clement Janequin. “Song of Birds” is a famous chanson that imitates countless bird calls, and Leonard Bernstein’s “The Lark” will showcase the entire chorus’ musicality.
The choir will also perform choruses from Orpheus and Eurydice, the opera by Willibald Gluck, which features guest soloist Augustine Mercante, a counter-tenor.
The program also includes 19th-century chansons by Gabriel Faure, and folk songs such as “Frere Jacques” and the “Dirait on” arranged by Morton Lauridsen.
Another highlight of the concert: performances by three of the winners of the third annual competition for high school students.
The chorus will end a yearlong recognition of Henry Gibbons, the artistic director of the choir, for 25 years of service, and bid farewell to associate conductor Amanda Quist, winner of the James Mulholland Fellowship of the American Choral Directors Association.
