Companies stage summer musicals

11:24 AM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009

Denton stages are dark this weekend, but both the Campus Theatre and the Denton Civic Center will be busy later this month.

Music Theatre of Denton will stage its final summer community musical next week with Way North of Ordinary, a parody by Donna Trammell.

For years, the local company has invited anyone who wants to perform to attend a sign-up party, then appear in the summer musical. The show was more about faces and personalities than showing off vocals and production values.

Way North of Ordinary is directed by Peggy Capps, and features Joe Pinson, this year’s winner of the individual Community Arts Recognition Award given by the Greater Denton Arts Council.

Pinson wrote a satirical song, “North of Ordinary,” as a riff on the city’s branding campaign. Pianist Bob Rogers will perform in the show, too.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. July 10-11 at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Admission is $10.

Denton Theatre School stages Narnia, a musical adaptation of the book The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The theater school is the Denton Community Theatre’s outreach to children and teens.

Performances will be at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. July 17-18 at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets are $10 and seating is general admission.
