Never mind the Joneses

Album brings out Smith’s underdog

11:30 AM CST on Thursday, February 4, 2010

When you visit country artist Corey Smith’s profile on MySpace.com, the first song that streams comes with a title that elicits a cringe.

Corey Smith

“I Love Black People.”

Still, the song itself shows that Smith might rock out with a boot-scootin’ twang, but he’s no bumpkin. With nothing but an easy tenor and a guitar, he sings: “I might speak with a drawl/keep a little chew in my jaw/but I love everyone.”

His point is that he’s a dyed-in-the-wool Georgia guy, but that doesn’t mean he matches the stereotype of the country-fried white guy with a genetic destiny for racism or homophobia.

Otherwise, his album Keeping Up With the Joneses is a reliable narrative of a rural underdog who has red, white and blue values — family, hard work and fun.

Smith plays Denton today at Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C. Doors open at 8 p.m., and Smith plays at 10 p.m. Texas Renegade is the opening act. Cover is $10.
