Two events, one cause

Market gets boost from benefit nights

11:56 AM CST on Thursday, January 28, 2010

This weekend will offer two different ways to support the Denton Community Market that will be opening in April. The market will be a place for local produce, art and handmade items.

On Friday, Hannah’s Off the Square will be hosting a social reception with a silent auction to raise money for the market. Tickets for the event are $20 at the door or $15 in advance, available at Hannah’s.

The reception will allow supporters and vendors to meet and celebrate the market, said market coordinator Kati Trice.

The silent auction is oriented toward local businesses and will offer such items as local cheeses and wines donated by Hannah’s and handmade goods, Trice said.

For those who dine at the restaurant that night, 10 percent of their bill will go toward funding the market.

On Sunday, Brave Combo will be headlining a benefit show at Hailey’s. Bridges and Blinking Lights, Young and Brave, and With Gusto will also perform.

Four singer-songwriters will perform on Hailey’s small stage between bands: Emil Rapstine, Dan Dockrill, Mike McConnell and Claire Morales.

The night will include a raffle for gift certificates and other items. Raffle tickets cost $1.

“People are encouraged to buy as many raffle tickets as they like,” Trice said.

Pan Ector, a screen printing company, will set up at Hailey’s to print the Denton Community Market logo on T-shirts. Trice said people can bring their own shirts for screen printing.

Trice said she wants the market to be a place for the community to come together and believes it will offer something for everyone. The market will be open every second Saturday from April through November.

“The market is an expression of the beautiful diversity that exists in our city,” Trice said.
