Daniel Yi won first place in the instrumental division, but wasn’t able to perform with the other winners for the Mother’s Day concert. Yi, a senior at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, performed a concerto for oboe by Haydn. He earned a $150 scholarship and a $100 gift certificate to Penders Music.

Judges of the competition were pianist and internationally renowned coach Harold Heiberg, University of North Texas pianist and coach Rose Marie Chisholm, and clarinetist John Scott, a professor at UNT.

Laurel Miller, chairwoman of the competition, is a retired professor of voice at UNT and opera singer.

She said the competition has multiple benefits for the young musicians.

“Every competitor benefits from practicing the skills of auditioning,” she said.

“The winners, of course, enjoy monetary rewards to further their study and also the chance to perform classical repertoire before an appreciative audience.”
