Exposed workings: Artists band together to launch First Friday

12:02 AM CST on Saturday, February 6, 2010

By Britney Tabor / Staff Writer

A handful of local businesses with a common interest in art launched a monthly event Friday to draw more people to downtown Denton and see them at work in their craft.

Organized by Shannon Drawe and Leslie Kregel, who are husband and wife, Friday’s debut was intended to launch a monthly event that will expand into a downtown community event, Kregel said.

“Part of it is my interest in the community and exposing people to what artists are doing in town,” she said. “It’s just a chance to enhance that exposure.”

Kregel said the concept for First Friday was fueled by a conversation with her sister about a similar event that’s taken off in Athens, Ga.

Athens’ Railroad Arts District First Friday opens studios and businesses so people can browse and enjoy art, music, food and refreshments.

Kregel, who owns Cimarrona Hat Co., anticipates extending her studio hours for First Friday events so patrons can see her creating eco-friendly hats, scarves and other accessories out of recycled wool sweaters.

Drawe, a local photographer, said First Friday Denton will allow artists, artisans, studios, galleries and other businesses to highlight the works of art in their establishments. Some participating businesses that normally normally close before 9 p.m. have been asked to extend their hours on First Fridays so that patrons can experience what they have to offer, Drawe said.

“We’re going to try to grow this thing into something that’s sustainable and something that people can look forward to every month,” he said.

Participating in First Friday’s debut were Bushwackers Wine Safari and A Creative Art Studio, both on West Oak Street.

Bushwackers owner Amanda Espinosa said Denton has “a great artistic feel to it” that’s not well known and that events like First Friday allow residents to visit local businesses they wouldn’t normally frequent.

Robin Huttash, co-owner of A Creative Art Studio, said her shop would stay open until 9 p.m. for First Friday events to offer art displays and demonstrations.

In addition to stained glass, oil and pastel art done by herself and studio co-owner Lin Hampton, the work on display represents 15 artists from Denton or with ties to the area.

“I think by having a special day for people to know that … businesses will stay open in Denton, will draw people to Denton to experience art,” Huttash said.
