New book spotlights women’s music fests

Songs in Black and Lavender: Race, Sexual Politics and Women’s Music was written by University of North Texas professor Eileen M. Hayes.

A professor at the University of North Texas has written a book spotlighting women’s music festivals.

Eileen M. Hayes, chairwoman of the UNT College of Music’s Division of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology, wrote Songs in Black and Lavender: Race, Sexual Politics and Women’s Music, which was recently published by the University of Illinois Press.

Hayes conducted research at eight music festivals for women, focusing on black women’s involvement.

“She argues that the women’s music festival is a significant institutional site for the emergence of black feminist consciousness in the contemporary period,” according to her publisher’s website.
