Youth for a young year

High school students, struggling family man spotlighted in movies

12:04 AM CST on Sunday, January 3, 2010

By Boo Allen / Film Critic

The week and the year start with an unmistakably youthful look: Falling Up (***). Not rated, 98 minutes; coming Tuesday to DVD.

This amiable romantic comedy stars Joseph Cross as mild-mannered Henry O’Shea, a young man whose father dies and leaves his family in bad financial shape. To help his family, Henry drops out of nursing school and takes a job as a Manhattan doorman, taking abuse from his boss (Joe Pantoliano) but making friends with a co-worker (Snoop Dogg, credited as Calvin Broadus). Henry falls for Scarlett (Sarah Roemer), the daughter of a pretentious, snobby tenant (Mimi Rogers), making for a shaky romance and a tense working situation.

The DVD includes a brief “making of” featurette.

Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles starred in 10 Things I Hate About You, available Tuesday as a 10th anniversary DVD.
10 Things I Hate About You — 10th Anniversary Edition (***) Witnessing the budding talent of a young Heath Ledger marks the greatest attraction of this anniversary replay. The 20-year-old Australian played Patrick Verona, an American high school student. He won’t admit to his crush on Kat (Julia Stiles), a student who seems to hate everyone. Based loosely on The Taming of the Shrew, the film, which spawned a TV series (see below), retains its charm and humor while showcasing this lost talent. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Larry Miller and David Leisure.

Rated PG-13, 98 minutes.

The movie comes in two-disc DVD and Blu-ray editions. Supplements found on both are commentary and a 35-minute featurette looking back on the film with director Gil Junger. The Blu-ray offers the screen tests of the four main young actors, allowing a chance to see Ledger at the beginning of his Hollywood career.

American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (*1/2) In the latest from this never-ending franchise, some things — and people — are beginning to look familiar and shamelessly redundant. Three high school boys stumble onto a book in the library that shows them the path to finally losing their virginity. This device lets director John Putch work in a series of silly scenes in which the boys confront naked and seminaked women, while unintentionally doing everything possible to thwart their success. Like most entries in the series, this one proves innocuous and devoid of higher meaning or merit. With Rosanna Arquette and, of course, Eugene Levy.

The DVD, also on Blu-ray, comes in unrated (94 minutes) and R-rated (92 minutes) versions.

The surprisingly ample bonus materials include 11 minutes of deleted scenes, a four-minute gag reel, the 20-minute segment “From the Set,” the eight-minute “On the Set,” American Pie trivia and more.

And it looks like the year will start out busy for kiddos:

Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You — Special Edition As Valentine’s Day approaches, Rabbit wants to cancel the holiday, claiming that he received too many cards the year before. Pooh and friends Piglet, Tigger and Christopher Robin also return in three new animated features, as they join forces when it looks like someone may be harboring a secret crush.

Rated TV-Y, 60 minutes.

The DVD includes the interactive “Catch the Love Bug Game,” as well as several Pooh valentines.

*

Barney: Please & Thank You Barney teaches Baby Bop how to be courteous.

Not rated, 65 minutes.

The disc includes 19 songs from three Barney episodes along with a special feature on party games.

*

The Best of Bob the Builder The Can-Do gang — Roley, Dizzy, Muck and Scoop — joins Bob in 10 episodes, as they team up to build various projects. The disc also holds a new half-hour feature, “On-Site Trains,” along with several new games.

Not rated, 140 minutes.

*

Thomas & Friends: Splish, Splash, Splosh! In four Thomas episodes, the island of Sodor’s new driver, the aptly named Driver Perkins, lends a hand to the other engines and engineers. Two new games are included.

Not rated, 46 minutes.

*

Let’s Grow: Lend a Helping Hand Everyone works together in five episodes featuring Barney, Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam and Angelina Ballerina.

Not rated, 68 minutes.

And the new year also sees the arrival of several TV series:

10 Things I Hate About You — Volume One This ABC Family series, loosely based on the movie, features two squabbling sisters (Lindsey Shaw, Meaghan Jette Martin) who become entangled with the new boy (Ethan Peck).

Rated TV-14, 230 minutes.

The set includes 10 episodes along with commentaries, the pilot, bloopers, cast interviews and a behind-the-scenes tour with Martin and Shaw.

*

Make It or Break It: Extended Edition — Volume One Also from ABC Family are 10 episodes, on three discs, of this weekly look at the competitive world of high school gymnastics. With Zachary Abel, Chelsea Hobbs, Ayla Kell, Josie Loren and Candace Cameron.

Rated TV-14, 430 minutes.

The discs also hold deleted scenes, an unaired extended season finale and a featurette on how the cast approached and executed some of the daring exercises.

*

The Philanthropist — The Complete Series This odd and eventually unsuccessful TV drama had a lot going for it but may have cratered because of its unlikely premise. James Purefoy starred as Teddy Rist, an arrogant but extremely wealthy businessman who undergoes a humanitarian transformation and sets out to save the world. At least the premise provided for filming in exotic locales. Neve Campbell co-stars as a former lover turned administrator. Eight episodes come on two discs.

Not rated, 307 minutes.

Also this week: Big Love — The Complete Third Season; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs; The Final Destination — In 3-D; Lorna’s Silence.
