Best of war and the West

Media giants release sets of four movies

12:47 AM CDT on Sunday, May 2, 2010

By Boo Allen / Film Critic

This week we start with some choice oldies:

TCM Greatest Classic Films collections: War and Westerns Warner Home Video joins once again with corporate sibling Turner Classic Movies for the latest wave of quality vintage films from their expansive vault. The enticement comes in the variety as well as in the economical packaging, as each collection ($27.92) comes in one cover with two discs containing four full-length films and a few supplements. Each package spotlights varied talents.

In the War collection, the casts include all-stars Henry Fonda and Robert Ryan in Battle of the Bulge, Errol Flynn and David Niven in The Dawn Patrol, Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine in Gunga Din and John Wayne as a submarine commander in Operation Pacific.

The Westerns include Wayne starring in Chisum, Sam Peckinpah directing James Coburn in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Gregory Peck in The Stalking Moon, and Peckinpah again directing western icons Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott in the elegiac masterpiece Ride the High Country.

Coming Tuesday to DVD.

Other actors appearing in the collections include Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Eva Marie Saint, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Jason Robards, Ben Johnson and a galaxy of Hollywood luminaries.

Five Minutes of Heaven (***) In 1975, Alistair, a 17-year-old Northern Irish lad, kills a man in that country’s notorious “Troubles.” The murdered man’s younger brother, Joe, witnesses the killing. Thirty-three years later, Alistair (Liam Neeson) becomes, after serving his jail time, a respected citizen who agrees to appear on a television program with the adult Joe (James Nesbitt). Director Oliver Hirschbiegel bases his film on Guy Hibbert’s script taken from real events. The tense drama becomes a cathartic exercise in reconciliation, helped greatly by Nesbitt, who, while not as well known as Neeson, turns in a dynamic performance.

Omar Sharif and Julie Christie made the 1965 film Doctor Zhivago into a stirring romance that won awards and deserves anniversary editions.

Not rated, 89 minutes.

The DVD holds a five-minute “behind-the-scenes” featurette.

Doctor Zhivago — 45th Anniversary Edition This lush, lyrical rendition of David Lean’s production of Boris Pasternak’s sprawling novel set during the Russian Revolution has been remastered and digitally restored for this 45th anniversary DVD edition and Blu-ray debut.

Omar Sharif stars as a physician and member of the nobility swept aside by his country’s turmoil. A ravishing Julie Christie plays his lover, Lara, the inspiration for composer Maurice Jarre’s haunting, Oscar-winning “Lara’s Theme.” The breathtaking scenery combines with a complex story to render one of the all-time great romantic films.

Rated PG-13, 200 minutes.

The two-disc DVD set offers the movie with two commentaries, including one with Sharif, Rod Steiger and Sandra Lean. Disc 2 holds almost three hours of extras, including an hourlong “making of” featurette and nearly a dozen more, including segments on Moscow, the cinematography, Pasternak, David Lean, screen tests, cast and crew biographies, and New York press interviews with Christie and Sharif.

Leap Year (**1/2) Amy Adams stars in this frothy romantic comedy that benefits from the cinematography of the gorgeous Irish countryside. She plays a pushy American who travels to Ireland on Feb. 29 because she thinks it allows her to propose to her reluctant boyfriend (Adam Scott). But she gets sidetracked out to the boondocks, where she meets and eventually must rely upon a handsome but feisty Irish bloke (Matthew Goode).

Declan (Matthew Goode) and Anna (Amy Adams) attempt to deny their chemistry in Leap Year, a romantic comedy that follows one woman’s determined quest to marry the perfect man.

Rated PG, 101 minutes.

The DVD offers seven minutes of deleted scenes. The Blu-ray offers those along with various interactive features.

Ex-Drummer (**) Bits of brilliance run through this Dutch-Flemish language film, but on the whole, it is a mess. Three self-proclaimed handicapped men want to start a band but need a drummer. They approach a well-known writer who knows nothing about drums. Together, they practice for a big competition. But this plot summary never captures the often innovative — but more often pointless — detours taken.

Not rated, 104 minutes.

The DVD holds three music videos and a 21-minute “making of” featurette.

And for the kids:

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1980s This collection revisits 11 shows from not that long ago. The two-disc set of animated favorites includes such choices as Goldie Gold and Action Jack, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, The Kwicky Koala Show, Monchhichis, Thundarr the Barbarian, Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos, and Mister T.

Not rated, 265 minutes.

The set also holds a featurette on the origins and lasting legacy of Thundarr the Barbarian.

*

My Friends Tigger & Pooh: Super Duper Super Sleuths Pooh, Tigger, Darby, Buster and the gang share a new adventure when they mistakenly eat vegetables that have been transformed by a shooting star. Suddenly, they have magical powers.

Rated TV-Y, 45 minutes.

The DVD features three additions, including interactive features and a never-before-seen episode.

*

Handy Manny: Big Race Manny and his crew rebuild a jalopy so he has a ride in the Wood Valley 500. Trademark Manny-grit combines with dedicated teamwork to save the day.

Rated TV-Y, 48 minutes.

The DVD offers three additional segments, including new featurettes and a never-before-seen episode.

*

The Great Mouse Detective — Mystery in the Mist Edition This 1986 Disney favorite tells the story of Basil, the Sherlock Holmes-inspired mouse detective. He and sidekick Dawson face off against nemesis Professor Ratigan.

Rated G, 74 minutes.

The DVD includes all-new supplements, including a “making of” featurette, a game, a singalong and more.
