It took D. Jack Davis several years to curate the exhibit of faculty art at UNT on the Square.  “Laying the Foundation: UNT Art Faculty, 1890-1970” started out as a research project for Davis, the recently retired dean of the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. At the public reception held Thursday, former and current art faculty crowded the downtown gallery to see pieces by both popular past faculty such as Carlos Merida and work by lesser-known teachers such as Mabel Vandiver.

It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon during the 2010 35 Denton music festival when Denton musician and composer Andy Cooper sat at a wobbling bistro table at Dan’s Silverleaf. He was laughing at a documentary that tracked underground music on one of the coasts, and reflecting on a big decision he made eight years ago. “I made two big decisions when I had my heart attack,” Cooper said. “I stopped smoking, and I decided that for the rest of my life, I would spend 90 percent of my time playing music and 10 percent making a living instead of the other way around. Hey, lying on an operating table with your chest cracked open makes things a lot more clear to you.”
