Sanger rider remembered at crash site

Labor Day weekend anniversary of death

08:16 AM CDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008

Family and friends gathered in Fort Worth on Sunday to honor the memory of Dody Montgomery, a Sanger resident killed by a passing driver during Labor Day weekend in 2007.

At the time of the collision, she was standing next to her motorcycle.

A red cross was planted in memory of Montgomery near the accident site as part of a new motorcycle awareness campaign initiated by Texas ABATE, a motorcyclists’ rights organization.

Montgomery’s daughter, Tami Selby was also injured in the accident. She is a member of the Denton ABATE chapter.

More than 100 people made the trip down Interstate 35W from Denton to the Heritage Trace Parkway overpass, where Montgomery, Selby, and Selby’s son Mikey stopped because of impending rain while riding to Fort Worth last year.

A driver lost control of his sports utility vehicle and careened into both bikes. Montgomery was killed instantly.

Tami Selby was severely injured, but Mikey Selby escaped without injury.

The case is pending in a Fort Worth court.

The “red cross” program is part of a motorcycle fatality awareness campaign initiated this year by Texas ABATE.

Texas Department of Transportation already had specifications in place for memorial crosses to commemorate highway fatalities, but there are no rules for color on the books.

Texas ABATE has claimed the color red for motorcycle fatality crosses — the first of which was placed in Collin County on Aug. 9, in memory of veteran Jim Cook.
