Coleman wins commissioner’s seat
More than 60 percent of Precinct 1 voters pick Republican candidate01:41 AM CST on Wednesday, November 5, 2008
Republican Hugh Coleman emerged from Election Day as the new county commissioner for Precinct 1, defeating his Democratic opponent, Phyllis Wolper.
Coleman garnered more than 60 percent of the vote, much of it coming from early voting, during which more than half of Denton County’s registered voters cast their ballots.
“I think the campaign turned out well,” he said. “We worked real hard and concentrated on our message of decreasing taxes and providing more law enforcement for the citizens of Denton County.”
The county’s population growth and the traffic it has brought were a large part of the issues important to both candidates in this election.
Coleman plans to tend to those issues, as well as another he feels is as important: consolidating the road districts under a single appointed county engineer. This move would improve the current transportation plan, eliminate duplicate machinery and road crews as well as the need for high-priced consultants, Coleman has said.
Coleman’s defeat of Wolper is another notch for a Republican Party that has dominated the Democrats in Denton County through several election cycles.
Wolper was confident in her chances of winning after a Democratic resurgence in Denton County that drew 54,000 voters during the March primary.
“I congratulate Hugh Coleman on running a good race,” Wolper said. “I am proud being a part of this process. I couldn’t be prouder of our hundreds of volunteers and our campaign people that put forth a monumental effort and brought our party forward.”
Now Coleman is looking ahead to being sworn in and getting to work tending to the needs of Precinct 1.
“I am looking forward to implementing the policies that I think will help the citizens of Denton County — like taking the politics out of roads, getting a full-time county engineer and concentrating on providing additional deputies to rural parts of the county and freshwater supply districts,” Coleman said.
