Two other candidates, businessman Justin Bell and college student Darac Favre, combined to receive about 12 percent of the 3,330 votes cast — preventing either McNeill or Burroughs from reaching 50 percent and extending a bruising campaign for another month.

Big spenders try to get word out

Individually, the area’s biggest spender so far is Charles Read, candidate for the Hickory Creek Town Council. He reported spending $6,092.

Rivals hope to spark growth
PILOT POINT — Candidates for mayor and City Council hope to stimulate growth, which has stagnated for this city of 3,950 in the county’s far northeast corner. Many agree that the city’s square is an untapped asset, but each offers a different set of skills and experiences to make that happen.

District 6 candidates respond

Following are responses from at-large District 6 candidates Jerry Mohelnitzky and Joe Mulroy. Answers from other candidates can be viewed online at www.dentonrc.com.

Burroughs: Group's mailer 'illegal'

Mark Burroughs

Denton mayoral candidate Mark Burroughs is questioning the legality of a recent mailer that claims his campaign is awash in conflict-of-interest questions. The group that funded the mailer — led by local activist Bob Clifton — has not registered a campaign treasurer with the city secretary’s office. The state election code prevents political committees from spending or accepting more than $500 unless they file a campaign treasurer appointment.

West holds sway in Hickory Creek

HICKORY CREEK — Rumblings from residents living on the east side have gotten a little louder this year, especially now that both candidates vying for Place 4 on the Town Council come from the west side.

Forum focuses on knowledge

Term limits for Denton City Council members have created “institutional ignorance” in city leadership, a mayoral candidate said Monday. “It’s caused serious problems in this city,” Mark Burroughs, a former three-term council member, said during a candidate forum at Denia Recreation Center. “It creates institutional ignorance on council because you’re off after six years, and you’ve got all new faces trying to relearn [city business].”

First day of early voting draws nearly 200 to polls
Nearly 200 voters cast ballots Monday as early voting began in the Denton City Council election. Competitive races for mayor and three council seats drew 197 voters to the polls.

Two step up for Place 3 position
CORINTH — Two former candidates are vying again for a seat on the City Council, this time to replace Ronnie Glasscock in Place 3. John Booher, 36, was unsuccessful in his first bid for the seat two years ago against Glasscock, who did not file for re-election. Holsomback, too, was unsuccessful in his race for Place 4 against incumbent Joe Harrison. Harrison is unopposed in his bid for re-election, as is Place 1 incumbent Paul Ruggiere. Early voting began Monday and continues in Corinth during regular business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 1 and 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 2, at City Hall, 3300 Corinth Parkway. Extended voting hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 5 and 6. The election is May 10.

Candidates answer public's questions

The following are a representation of questions submitted by the public to candidates of the Denton City Council 2008 election. Candidates for the May 10th election of the Denton City Council were asked to select at least five questions and provide respective answers.

Talk of the town propels race

OAK POINT — Residents formed a specific-purpose committee to support three candidates, hinting that last summer’s adoption of a resolution making English the official language of this small, lakeside community may still be in the undertow. Resident T. Jervis Underwood, treasurer for Visionary Citizens of Oak Point, said that the language resolution was not the only reason for the group’s formation, but it gave people a push.

Growth key in Krum ISD election
Out of six candidates in the Krum school board race, most feel that growth is the biggest issue facing the district. Mark Cofer, Kirby Hicks, Terry Knight, Bart Moore, Joe Vilicich and Ted Wiley Sr. are aiming for the three open seats in the May 10 election. This is the first Krum school board race for each candidate.

04/27/2008

Tiffs spice up city races
Denton City Council candidates have survived two legal battles, conflict-of-interest claims, marred mailers and enough debates to tire even the most civic-minded soul. All that’s left for them to do is win the election. Early voting starts Monday in a contest marked by lawsuits, policy clashes and a range of political missteps.

04/26/2008

Candidates agree Pilot Point ISD must plan for growth
The two Pilot Point school board candidates have similar concerns when it comes to finances but veer apart in their opinions about experience. Melinda Street faces incumbent Linda DeGraffenreid for Place 2 in the Pilot Point school board race. Election day is May 10.

Texas high court won’t keep Kamp off ballot
The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a Denton City Council candidate’s attempt to strike his opponent’s name from the May 10 ballot.

City to buy out top administrator

Clovia English

CORINTH — The City Council has agreed to accept the city manager’s resignation and pay out her contract eight months before it ends. Clovia English signed a two-year contract, earning $120,000 per year, when she came to Corinth from Lockhart in November 2006. She leaves with a buyout package worth about 1 1/2 times her annual salary, which, according to council member Shannon Bryan, is consistent with other exit offers made to city managers.

Hopefuls focus on teacher, staff pay
Lake Dallas school board candidates agree that employee compensation is a major issue facing the current board. Corinth police Officer Lance Stacy faces incumbent Boyd Taylor, an area business owner, for Place 5 in the May 10 election. Early voting starts Monday.

04/24/2008

Burroughs, Moreno defend absences

Two Denton City Council candidates who serve on other local government bodies defended themselves Thursday after skipping meetings on key issues this week. Mayoral candidate Mark Burroughs, vice chairman of the Denton County Transportation Authority, missed the board’s vote Thursday on an environmental impact study for the planned commuter rail.

Court: Kamp stays on ballot
A Fort Worth appeals court Thursday rejected a Denton City Council candidate’s attempt to remove his opponent’s name from the May 10 ballot. The 2nd Court of Appeals denied District 5 hopeful Mike Sutton’s bid to disqualify his rival, Mayor Pro Tem Pete Kamp, for an alleged violation of the city’s term limits.

04/22/2008

Candidates to remain on ballot
A district judge Monday allowed Denton Mayor Perry McNeill and two other candidates to remain on the May 10 ballot, after a lawsuit challenged their eligibility. Visiting Judge David Evans said he would not intervene in an election that is under way. Early voting in the City Council races starts April 28, but city officials said they already sent out two absentee ballots.

04/21/2008

Sanger expects subdued election

SANGER — Even though two of the three incumbents face challenges to their re-election bids, most of the candidates still think this spring’s race will be low-key. Growth has slowed here, as it has in much of Denton County, just as the city implemented a new comprehensive plan. City leaders hope the new plan will encourage construction of more mid-priced and high-end homes.

04/19/2008

Sutton aiming to get Kamp off ballot

An attorney for Mike Sutton, a City Council District 5 candidate, has asked the 2nd Court of Appeals in Fort Worth to direct the city of Denton to remove his opponent’s name from the ballot. And that court issued an order Friday that Mayor Pro Tem Pete Kamp, who is running for the District 5 at-large seat, should file a response by 5 p.m. Tuesday showing why she should be left on the ballot.

04/20/2008

Nearly 2,000 cross party lines to vote
Wes and Glenda Crenshaw bleed conservative red, but with the Republican presidential nomination sealed up, the option of crossing over to vote in the Democratic primary was all too tempting for Wes. “He didn’t want [Barack] Obama to win in Texas,” Glenda Crenshaw said of her husband. “He wanted Hillary [Clinton] to stay in the race until the convention so they would duke it out.”

Argyle committee may up ante

ARGYLE — Local developers have formed a special committee to support one incumbent and two challengers in the Argyle Town Council race. Called the Argyle Concerned Citizens for Change, the specific-purpose committee was formed to support the candidacies of Joey Hasty, Dona Schroetke and Place 5 incumbent Joe Phelps.

Fire association backs incumbents
The Denton Fire Fighters Association on Wednesday endorsed both incumbents in the May 10 City Council election, citing their past support for the fire department.

Ex-chief sues mayor of Krum
Troy Mills, former chief of the Krum Volunteer Fire Department, sued Krum Mayor Terri Wilson on Monday in district court for defamation, seeking undisclosed damages. The City Council fired Mills, 45, in September after an independent audit found the fire department’s expenditures exceeded its budget and caused financial problems for the city.

04/15/2008

Judge to hear term limit case

A district judge expressed doubt Monday over Denton Mayor Perry McNeill’s and Mayor Pro Tem Pete Kamp’s eligibility to run in the May 10 election. Visiting Judge David Evans said he had a “hard time” accepting Denton city attorneys’ argument that City Council members could bypass term limits by running for different seats, as McNeill and Kamp are attempting.

04/14/2008

Candidates sound off on contract

Denton lawyer Mark Burroughs said his firm should continue collecting delinquent taxes for the city if he is elected mayor May 10, despite language in the firm’s contract that seems to discourage such an arrangement. Burroughs also said he would not object if the city chooses to renew the contract when it expires June 30, even though he said he turned down a chance to bid on the same job during his prior tenure on the City Council to avoid the perception of a conflict of interest.

Growth in play in Argyle
ARGYLE — In one of the fastest-growing counties in the fastest-growing region of the country, Argyle is, comparatively, a slow grower. Frisco and Little Elm have been adding residents by the tens of thousands in the past decade, compared to Argyle, which notches up another hundred or so per year. Most new residents who have moved to Argyle — its population now hovers around 3,100 — having been attracted by the small schools, plentiful open space and old-growth oak trees.

Lull raises concerns for schools
With the town of Argyle and the school district experiencing what may be considered growing pains and community members divided over ongoing issues, seven candidates are vying for three at-large spots on the Argyle school board. Incumbents Dr. Debbie Cantrell, Randy McKellar and John Schinske hope to keep their seats against challengers Kent Bateman, Kim Hinnrichs, Matt Portz and Denise Sizelove in the May 10 election.
