University schedules moon party tonight
12:03 AM CDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009
The astronomy program at the University of North Texas will start celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon today.
A moon party is scheduled tonight at Rafes Urban Astronomy Center.
Members of the public are invited to look through several of the observatory’s telescopes for close-up views of meteor craters, lunar mountains and the site of man’s first step on the moon’s surface.
Astronomers will give short presentations on the moon, including how it was formed, why it appears to change shape and why it’s important for astronauts to return to the moon.
Presentations will begin at 9 p.m. and continue on the hour until midnight.
The astronomy center is located at 2350 Tom Cole Road in Denton.
