Blotter: Police arrest man accused of stealing digital camera

07:11 AM CST on Monday, January 5, 2009

A 19-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing a digital camera and its charger from a store Saturday morning.

Denton police were dispatched to the store in the 1500 block of South Loop 288 after two loss prevention officers stopped the man as he tried to leave the building at about 11:59 a.m. According to Sgt. Jeryl Golden, the employees told police that the man removed the items from a display case and stuffed them down the front of his pants.

Golden said the employees reported that the man tried to run and they caught, handcuffed and detained him until police arrived. The man was transported to the city jail. Golden said that, because the value of the items was more than $50, the man would be transported to the county jail.

Other reports

600 block of Wolftrap Drive — A woman reported to police that, sometime between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, someone stole her purse from her car while she was visiting a friend.

Golden said the woman told police that she believed she left her car unlocked. The purse contained $250 in cash, credit and identification cards and a digital camera valued at $90.

700 block of Bolivar Street — A woman reported that someone made three fraudulent purchases using her checking account. Golden said the suspect was believed to be the woman’s roommate, a 46-year-old woman. The fraudulent checks totaled about $900.

800 block of West U.S. Highway 380 — A man was arrested after he attempted to fill a prescription for a narcotic at a pharmacy drive-through Saturday morning.

Golden said police received a call from a pharmacist who reported that a man had dropped off two prescriptions — one for Vicodin and the other for Flexeril. Police headed to the pharmacy, where they waited for the man and arrested him on charges of prescription drug fraud.

600 block of Londonderry Lane — A 17-year-old male assaulted his girlfriend of the same age around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a police report.

The victim said she had wanted to leave her boyfriend’s apartment to go out with her girlfriends. Golden said the suspect got upset, pushed the victim and attempted to choke her. When police arrived on the scene, the boyfriend was gone. The case is under investigation.

1200 block of West Oak Street — Police stopped two men who were staggering down the sidewalk, holding one another up for support, while trying to visit a fast-food restaurant Saturday morning.

Officers reported the men carried a strong scent of alcohol on their breaths, Golden said. The two officers arrested the men on public intoxication charges and transported them to city jail.

Once the men arrived at the jail, they were searched, Golden said, and 3.6 grams of marijuana were found in one man’s pockets. He was charged with possession of the drug.
