Blotter: Family comes home to ransacked house

07:19 AM CST on Tuesday, January 13, 2009

By Britney Tabor / Staff Writer

A family who left the country for the holidays returned to their home in the 400 block of North Crawford Street early Sunday morning to find that their house had been ransacked and several items had been taken.

The homeowner reported that the back door was broken, the house was in disarray and someone had rummaged though drawers and other areas.

A PlayStation 2, several games, DVDs, four Social Security cards, a DVD player, laptop case and various bank and credit card statements were missing, according to the report.

The family also reported that titles to four vehicles, along with titles to the home and to a trailer were taken. Other missing items included a stereo faceplate from a vehicle, the entire CD player system from another vehicle, two sub woofers, a jar of coins and various tools and equipment.

Ryan Grelle, Denton police spokesman, said the incident is believed to have occurred between Dec. 19 and Sunday.

Officers did not recover any fingerprints, and there are no suspects in the case, Grelle said.

Other reports

3500 block of Prominence Parkway — Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. Sunday where a city employee reported that bundles of copper had been stolen from a city electric substation. The man told police that he had just left a substation on Old Alton Road where he also noticed copper had been stolen. The man told officers that his supervisor asked him to also check the Prominence Parkway station to see if any copper had been stolen there, Grelle said. The copper stolen at the second location was valued at $500.

Police noted that the substation was locked and that no part of the fence had been tampered with, Grelle said.

5300 block of East McKinney Street — A man reported that he left his trailer home around 10 a.m. Sunday for church and returned around 11 a.m. to find his front door open and the house a mess.

He told officers, that a DVD player, a digital camera, 10 polo shirts, $1,200 in cash and checks and four men’s suits had been taken. The man told police that he locked his home before leaving.

Also in the same block, another family reported that they returned home to find a TV and DVD player valued at $500 and a portable DVD player valued at $100 missing. The homeowner reported that he locked his front door but may have left the kitchen window open.

Grelle said there are no suspects in either case.

2100 block of Parkside Drive — Police responded to an apartment complex about 2 a.m. Saturday, and they found a man with blood dripping from his eyebrow, Grelle said.

The victim told police that he and his roommate got into a fight after he came home and found the air conditioner on.

The man said he thought it was too cold to have the air on, and they argued. The verbal argument turned violent and the man was hit in the nose and eye he told police.

Grelle said no charges were filed in the case.

500 block of Acme Street — Police were dispatched to a school Jan. 6 in reference to a teen boy with a knife who was threatening people, Grelle said. When officers arrived they were told that the teen had fled in a blue Dodge Neon toward Interstate 35, according to a police report.

A teenage girl who identified herself to the officers as the boy’s girlfriend said that the boy slapped and punched her because he was angry that she had filed a police report earlier in the week with officers for a previous assault.

Another male student at the school noticed the boy yelling, screaming and assaulting the girl, so he intervened and was cut with a pair of scissors on his stomach, Grelle said.

No arrests were made, and the case is under investigation, Grelle said.
