Blotter: ‘Secret shopper’ paid in faux money orders

08:37 AM CST on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A woman who lives on Melton Road near Justin told Denton County sheriff’s deputies that she applied for a “secret shopper” job in a newspaper advertisement and received two bogus money orders in the mail.

The woman said she was supposed to deposit the money orders in her account and then wire money through a local wire service. She was supposed to document her experience with the wire service and send the information to the “secret shopper” company, according to the packet she got in the mail.

Over a period of time, she received two money orders for $2,850 each.

She used the first money order before being notified by her bank that it was counterfeit and her account was being debited. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were notified, since the money orders came from Canada.

Other reports

2500 block of Yellowstone Street — A man who claimed he was sending the first month’s rent and a deposit for a rental house sent a woman a bogus cashier’s check for $4,000, she told Denton police.

The woman said the man told her he lived in the United Kingdom and was coming to study for two years in the United States.

The woman took the cashier’s check to the police instead of depositing it and a detective confirmed her suspicion that it was counterfeit.

3700 block of South Interstate 35E — A woman reported that another woman broke out her car window and stole her purse while she was pumping gasoline Monday morning. The woman said she did not notice the other car but turned to discover the window was broken and the handbag was gone.

Witnesses said a car pulled up next to the victim’s car and a woman got out of the passenger side. She used something metal to break the window and reached inside. She grabbed the purse, jumped back into the car and it sped away.

The witnesses gave police a description of the woman, the car and its license plate number.
