Blotter: Lone robber targets bank on University Drive
12:05 AM CST on Thursday, February 28, 2008
A man walked into the Guaranty Bank on West University Drive on Tuesday afternoon and walked out with an undisclosed amount of cash he wasn’t entitled to.
According to a police report, the bank lobby was empty of other customers when a teller turned around and found the man standing at her station. The man said, “Give me all your money. Don’t push my button and you won’t get hurt.”
The teller thought the man might be joking, but he again demanded the money from her register.
She handed over some cash and he walked out. He was inside the bank only moments, according to the police report.
The man did not display a gun. No one saw him leave in a vehicle.
He was described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, between 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 11 inches tall. He weighed about 180 pounds, according to witnesses.
He wore a blue sweatshirt with a hood and a navy cap. He appeared unshaven with blond hair.
Witnesses said he took the money with his right hand and there appeared to be paint on his hands.
Other reports
800 block of West Eagle Drive — Someone took a woman’s garden gnome from a small garden in front of her apartment, she told police Tuesday.
The woman said a magazine saleswoman came to her door about 1 p.m. and became annoyed and sarcastic when she would not buy magazines. After the woman was gone, she realized the gnome was missing.
She described it as 1 foot tall, wearing a red hat, a green shirt and blue pants. The gnome was holding a shovel. She valued it at $20.
600 block of Smith Street — A man who was allowed to “hang out” in a portable storage unit apparently vandalized it, the owner reported Tuesday.
The owner said he allowed the transient to stay in the unused unit because he just sat in there and ate candy and potato chips and smoked cigars and didn’t bother anyone. He’d been there for about two months.
But sometime over the weekend someone used spray paint to write “The spot” on one inner wall and “WJ13” on another. The owner found two symbols painted on the outer walls as well.
