Blotter: Woman reports losing money in online repair deal

07:17 AM CST on Friday, February 29, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Police are investigating a report from a Virginia woman that a Denton business she found on the Internet defrauded her of more than $1,000.

The woman said she found the business in the 3300 block of East University Drive and its Web site claimed it would replace a transmission for $1,097. In August, she spoke by telephone to someone at the business and gave that person her credit card number.

She was instructed to take the car to a transmission business near her home in Martinsville, Va.

Her credit card was debited $17 for an authorization fee and later $1,080. Then someone from the business told her she would have to pay an extra $250 for “hard parts,” according to a police report. Later, she was told the job had not been completed and would not be completed until she paid a total $2,500 for the work.

She contacted the local shop and learned her transmission work had been completed. That business had received no payment in the last six months from the Denton business, according to the report.

Other reports

1200 block of Cleveland Street — A man called police Wednesday after finding a tiny camera in the vent in his bathroom.

The man said his roommates turned up the heat and he was too warm, so he decided to close off the vent in his bathroom. He tried, but something was keeping it from closing, he said. He reached into the vent and pulled out a tiny camera.

He believes one of his roommates may have placed the camera there to tape the victim’s girlfriend in the bathroom.

The man said he believes that because the roommate has taped himself and his girlfriend having sex and has shown it to the other roommates.

300 block of East McKinney Street — A bicycle officer on patrol in Quakertown Park saw a man sitting in the park with a paper bag.

The officer said he knows transients often sit there and drink alcohol from a bag.

When the man saw the police officer, the man put the bag under his coat and began walking away. The officer asked the man what was in the bag, and he replied that it was a beer for his friend.

The man said he had no identification, and the officer placed him under arrest. He found an identification card with a name on it that the man said was his “work name,” according to the police report.
