Blotter: 5 students arrested on hazing charges at TWU
07:20 AM CST on Tuesday, March 3, 2009
Texas Woman’s University police officers arrested five students on hazing charges Monday morning and are looking for a former student who has an arrest warrant as well.
TWU Police Chief John Erwin said the women are members of an unsanctioned sorority they call Krimson Kourts. They are accused of hazing pledges during initiation rituals between Jan. 29 and Feb. 8.
“It was basically slapping, forcing calisthenics, confinement in closets, assignment of menial tasks and other types of psychological browbeating,” Erwin said.
Officers served the five warrants on campus. The sixth woman is not enrolled this semester and lives off campus, the chief said. The five students have been suspended pending the outcome of the case, he said.
“We are filing one count each, but there is a possibility of multiple counts within the case,” Erwin said. “That will be up to the district attorney.”
Hazing is a Class B misdemeanor under the Education Code.
Krimson Kourts is not recognized as a sorority by the university.
“It is a very loose organization. As a matter of fact, I had never heard of it until this case came up,” Erwin said.
