Report: Singer seeking band finds harassment

08:20 AM CST on Wednesday, March 10, 2010

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer

A 21-year-old Denton woman told police Monday that a man has been sending her threatening text messages after she responded to his ad on Craigslist last week.

The woman told police she is a Christian singer and had gone to the online want ads looking for a backup band. After seeing an ad, ostensibly for a band looking for a female lead singer, she responded online. The man who placed the ad asked her to call him.

They talked Thursday and agreed to meet at his house at a later date, she said. Two days later, the man sent her a text message asking her what she would wear for the audition. She told police she thought the message was odd and she ignored it.

The man then sent her more than 50 text messages over the weekend, some sexually explicit and others threatening to kill her, a police report states.

The woman’s boyfriend texted the man, telling him to leave her alone, but the man only repeated his threat to kill her.

After the woman found the man listed online as a registered sex offender, she called Denton police to report a terroristic threat. Police asked the woman to keep the text messages and made a copy of the Craigslist ad for evidence.

Other reports

900 block of Cleveland Street — A Denton woman reported she took her 15-month-old baby with her to spend the night at her mother’s home in McKinney after her estranged husband threatened her. She returned home about 8 a.m. Monday to find her apartment ransacked and her bed cut with a knife.

She called Denton police because she was afraid to enter the apartment, not knowing whether the man was still inside. She told police she had not made any previous reports of his threats or violence.

1600 block of Ryan Road — The operator of a drilling rig called Denton police Monday to report that sometime between 6 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. Monday, someone kicked in the windshield of the rig, smashed a side-view mirror and broke a lever, causing about $295 in damage.

The operator told police he had run two boys off the drill site previously, but he needed the report in order to file an insurance claim.

26000 block of U.S. Highway 380 — An Aubrey woman called the sheriff’s office about 4 a.m. to report that she saw her uncle beat his son. Deputies located the victim and his mother at a local hospital and spoke to the two of them about the boy’s injuries.

Courthouse on the Square — A county employee called the sheriff’s office to report that someone painted graffiti on a tree on the Square and used a permanent pen to mark the southeast steps and the entrance door to the courthouse, which caused less than $500 in damage.
