Blotter: Report: Woman tries to pass drugs to child

08:22 AM CST on Thursday, March 11, 2010

By Bj Lewis / Staff Writer

A Denton woman attempted to hide marijuana in her young son’s clothing during a traffic stop in the 2400 block of Louise Street, according to a police report.

Police reported the female suspect, who was stopped for erratic driving behavior, was suspiciously tinkering with items in her pocket and her son’s clothing during the stop.

The officer asked the suspect for her driver’s license. She denied having the ID, and instead verbally identified herself. As the officer ran a routine background check on the woman, he noticed she was trying to keep her back to him as she fiddled with her son’s clothing, according to the report.

The officer noticed the suspect seemed to have something clenched in her left hand. When the officer asked her about it, the woman claimed to have nothing in her hand and quickly put it in her left pocket. The officer could hear the rustling of a cellophane wrapper and grabbed the suspect’s hand while it was in her pocket, the report said.

The officer managed to remove the item, which was identified as a wrapper containing marijuana. The officer arrested the suspect and proceeded to search the car. A purse was found in the car. Upon searching the purse, the officer discovered a small baggie with trace amounts of a white powder inside, which the officer believed was cocaine.

The search also revealed the lack of a child’s car seat.

Another passenger of the vehicle, who had rushed into a nearby apartment when the vehicle stopped, returned and identified herself as the child’s aunt. The child was released to the aunt while the suspect was taken in by the officer.

The victim wired the money and received shipping company information and a tracking number. When she called the shipping company to check on the package, she was told by an employee that nothing was connected to her tracking number.
