Blotter: Woman says police impostor pulled her over on street

07:21 AM CDT on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Denton police are investigating a report by a woman that a man pretending to be a police officer stopped her in the 700 block of Congress Street just before 1 a.m. Monday.

The woman said she was on her way home when she saw a single flashing red light in her rearview mirror. A vehicle she believed to be an unmarked police car pulled up behind her and a heavyset man dressed all in black got out and walked to her window.

The woman said he told her she was acting suspiciously and he asked for her driver’s license. She handed it over and the man asked whether the listed address was her current address.

The man asked her to step out of the car but she refused. He told her to roll down the window but she told him the window was not operable. He threw her driver’s license down and left, according to the report.

The woman said the man shined his flashlight in her eyes and she could not describe his face, but said she saw no police patches on his shirt.

The officer taking the report noted that he had stopped a Chevrolet Caprice in January that had a push bar attached to the front bumper and a spotlight that could be mistaken for a police car.

An investigation is continuing.

Other reports

1800 block of East McKinney Street — A woman reported about 8:20 a.m. Friday that someone took her laptop computer when she accidentally left it on a curb.

The woman said she intended to take her children to day care and then work on the laptop at a coffee shop. She was trying to consolidate trips from her apartment, she said, and brought her children, the computer and a bag of trash.

She put the computer on the curb while she took the trash to the Dumpster. She forgot about the computer and drove away without it. Later, when she thought of the computer, it was gone.

1700 block of Teasley Lane — An apartment manager reported that she was uneasy because two tenants apparently abandoned an apartment. They left most of their belongings inside and the door ajar, and all the lights on.

The men were of Middle Eastern descent and were in the United States earning pilot licenses, the manager said. They paid their rent in cash.

Police turned the case over to an agent from Homeland Security.
