Blotter: Witness: Burglar drew gun upon questioning

08:14 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A witness to an auto burglary confronted the burglar early Tuesday and was threatened with a gun.

The witness said he was on his way home from work for a dinner break about 2:15 a.m. in the 2000 block of North Elm Street.

He noticed that his neighbor’s car door was open and then saw a man walking rapidly away from the car.

The witness began following the suspect, asking him what he was doing. The suspect pointed a small black handgun at him, and the witness retreated and called 911, he said.

The visibly shaken witness gave arriving officers a description of the burglar, but he could not be located.

The neighbor said she mistakenly left her car doors unlocked, but nothing appeared to be missing.

Police found a gray sweatshirt beside the car that did not belong to the car’s owner.

Other reports

5300 block of McKinney Street — A couple reported Monday that a friend of the family stole a credit card from the hostess’ handbag while visiting their home Friday.

The couple’s bank called to inquire about some suspicious charges on the card. The woman checked her purse and found the card was missing.

More than $700 had been charged on the card, according to the report.

The friend has been unemployed for a time, and the couple believes she is now heavily using drugs.

1800 block of South Interstate 35E — A man reported Monday that someone apparently used his name and Social Security number to obtain a debit card for his account. Then the identity thief transferred $9,000 from his savings account to his checking account and used the debit card to remove it from his bank, the victim said.

1000 block of Stotle Street, Aubrey area — A woman reported to sheriff’s deputies Monday that someone took her $400 Coach handbag out of her car at about 3 a.m.

The woman said she was leaving a friend’s house. She took the handbag and two other bags to the car and then went back to get her child. When she left, she noticed the handbag was gone, she said, but she did not realize it had been stolen.

Later that day, a woman called to tell her that the woman’s daughter found the victim’s Social Security card and other items from her wallet on University Drive in Denton.

The victim also reported losing her cellphone, $800 cash, four credit cards and her driver’s license.
