Blotter: 28 minutes after theft, card was used 5 times

07:22 AM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Someone took a woman’s wallet from her purse while it was in a grocery store shopping cart and used her credit card five times within 28 minutes before she could get it canceled.

The woman reported that she was shopping at a store in the 1500 block of South Loop 288 about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. She left her purse sitting in the basket and turned her back on it to find groceries, she said.

When she reached the checkout counter, she realized the wallet was gone.

She drove straight to her bank to cancel her credit card. Employees checked and learned that the card had been used at 1:49, 1:56, 1:57, 2:07 and 2:09 p.m. in nearby stores for a total of $1,249 in charges.

Other reports

3400 block of Joyce Lane — A woman reported Wednesday that a man she has allowed to stay in her apartment since early January stole $2,800 worth of electronics from her.

The victim said she threw the man out and told him not to come back on Sunday because he was stealing money from her. One Tuesday he called to ask if he could retrieve some of his clothing, and she allowed him to come in while she took a shower. She now believes he took the extra key from her key ring while he was there.

On Wednesday she arrived home about 2 p.m. and realized that her 50-inch television, her DVD player and a speaker system were missing.

A neighbor reported seeing the man with his vehicle backed up to the apartment with the trunk open.

3000 block of Chimney Rock Drive — A man reported that he noticed a monthly charge on his credit card that had been automatically taken out for the past year. He did not authorize the monthly $49.95 charge, he said.

The charge was for an Internet pornography site and he believes that a friend who lived with him for a while stole his credit card information in order to open the Web porn account.
