07:05 AM CDT on Tuesday, June 9, 2009
Denton police responded to a burglary call in the 700 block of IOOF Street on Sunday, where the victim reported damages to an apartment where he let a homeless woman live.
According to the police report, the man obtained the furnished apartment with the intent of having it for his son, who is returning from military deployment next month. In the meantime, the man allowed a homeless woman to reside there.
The woman was attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and was allowed to stay in the apartment on the condition that she wouldn’t drink. The woman’s sponsor contacted the victim and alerted him that the woman had missed a meeting.
When the victim arrived at the apartment to check on her, the apartment owner found her outside, intoxicated and yelling at him.
According to the report, the man tried to get in the apartment to check it with the woman trying to push her way in after him. He managed to lock the door and tried to sneak out the back only to find her there attempting to get in again.
The man eventually escaped from the apartment, according to the report, and called police. When he returned later, the woman was not there.
Upon inspection of the apartment, he discovered the sofa, bed set, mattress and curtains cut up, according to the report. There was a knife found in the apartment that had not been there before. The woman could not be found.
