Blotter: Tough customer allegedly makes off with tip jar

Suspect fails to outrun witness and the law

07:33 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 7, 2009

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Customers at an ice cream shop said they confronted a man who stole a tip jar Friday night, chased him across the Denton Square and pointed him out to police.

Officers responded to the area about 10:30 p.m. after someone reported that a man took a jar of money from the shop and ran off. An officer saw a man running, and the man was pointing at another man in front of him, who was also running.

The officer maneuvered his squad car in front of the first running man and prevented him from fleeing. The second man said he saw him steal the tip jar at the ice cream shop and pursued him.

The officer took the man into custody and searched his pockets, which contained $148, according to the police report. The officer charged him with theft and public intoxication.

Back at the ice cream shop, the cashier said she was waiting on a line of people when the suspect walked in, announced he was rich, and went to the head of the line. He was wearing a woman’s straw hat, according to the report.

The cashier told him to go to the back of the line. Instead, he picked up the tip jar and ran out the door. Customers followed him out and confronted him outside. He threw $40 at them, according to the report, and then ran, with at least one of the customers in pursuit. One of the customers picked up the cash and gave it to the cashier.

The cashier didn’t know exactly how much cash was in the tip jar, so the officer seized all the cash in the man’s pockets.
