Blotter: Report: Newspaper carrier’s call leads to 3 arrests
07:17 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 8, 2009
Denton police arrested three people on burglary charges early Monday after a newspaper carrier called 911 because of seeing and hearing things that made her suspicious.
The carrier called from the 1700 block of Sam Bass Street about 3:45 a.m. She said she heard loud banging noises from a parking lot and saw a man running from a parked car that had a smashed window.
She saw the man get into a white sport utility vehicle, she said, and the vehicle, which she described, sped away.
Officers were nearby and spotted the fleeing SUV. According to the police report, an officer made a traffic stop on the SUV and three men jumped out and fled on foot. The officer was able to catch one of the men immediately. He found identification for a second man inside the abandoned SUV. Officers combing the area found the other two men on foot, and the first officer identified them as the men he saw running from the SUV.
The officers found a quantity of items in the SUV they believe was taken in burglaries, including property from the car with the smashed window. The men were charged with burglary of a motor vehicle.
Other reports
500 block of Ruth Street — Officers responding to a fight call found several men standing in a yard about 9:45 p.m. Monday. One of the men was bleeding.
He said he and his roommate were playing cards on the front porch when a woman walked by. She appeared to be drunk, he said, and she asked the two men for a beer. They told her no. Then she asked for money and they again refused, the victim said. She became upset and left, but soon returned with a man who demanded money from the men. When they again refused, he jumped onto the porch and punched one of the card players in the face.
Responding officers recognized the description of the woman as a known prostitute and drug user. They found her nearby and then found the man who had been with her. The woman said she was only trying to get the $20 the victim owed her for having sex with him. Her companion was charged with robbery.
5900 block of Eagle Mountain Street — Police are investigating the death Monday of a 23-year-old man as a possible drug overdose.
The man’s roommate called for help about 11:25 p.m. He said they had been drinking and playing video games. The victim ingested heroin, he said, and they both went to sleep. When he awoke, he could not awaken the other man, the roommate said. Autopsy results are awaiting toxicology reports.
8000 block of Country View Lane, Sanger area — A man reported to Denton County sheriff’s deputies Sunday that he came home from a lake trip and found a neighbor inside his home. He said he saw a pickup in his driveway and walked to the back of the house, where he saw a window had been forced open. He could hear voices inside and the sound of change being dumped into a bag.
He stepped inside and saw the neighbor and another man in his kitchen. The second man ran into a bedroom and threw down a bag of coins. The 19-year-old neighbor said he was “looking for something to eat,” and begged the victim not to tell his father. Both intruders ran, but the homeowner stopped them.
He told deputies that he kept the two from leaving with any of his property so he would not press charges.
